"The state press association at its recent session condemned Governor Chamberlain for vetoing the bill providing for the pub lication of delinquent taxes, an action that was uncalled for. Newspapers have no more right than any one else to be interest ed in graft affairs. Albany Democrat. The Democrat is as narrow in this comment as it is in every, view it expresses on yublic questions. Ninety-nine out of every one hundred taxpa'y ers want the delinquent list published, as a protection against speculators in tax titles, and the governor seems to have vetoed the bill solely to "get even" with the Oregonian, of Portland, where there is a long list of delinquents. Besides this, newspa pers are! the recognized mediums of publicity in all such mat ters, ad have a right to be offe'aded when a publio official, for poctTsmal reoeaas, seeks te cwrtail Ueir usefulness by denying tfaem the legal bcatiBS they are justly entitled to. If the Bemecrat was a Bewspaper it would join in the voice of protest ranked fey the stake prese, just as The Guard does, although this pa$er, under its present management, has not received a 'cent frepi a delinquent tax advertisement and probably would not bad the proposed law become eff ectivo. , Jei as The ftward Maintained all the time, there was noth ing ia the alleged kaeiag f youag Sristol. It was merely an in oithxrt et 4he efecceet of discipline among the boys at the dornutery m whisk the pwaieaaieat was not more' severe than tto ffae warraate-d, aad its infliction probably had nothing whatever te ike witlt tWe satoeqiont insanity of the student. Of u'rse, the enemies of the University have emphasized the affair m tcAer to create seitimeat against the institution, and yellow newspapers ia Portland have printed exaggerated first-page stM-ics coaeeraiag it for no other purpose than to cater to those rondrs wluwe appetite for the sensational must be satiated. Tae anaaal rtporl of City Recorder Dorris is very gratifying k the taxpiiyers of Eugene. It 'shows an increase of only $24,080 ia oatstaadingwarrarKs for the year past, although the ity has expealed much more than that amount in the paving of street iafersactions. Mayor Matlock's message is also a plain paJblio iocaaieat that needs neither explanation nor comment, because it may be understood by every reader. That is the high est commencRitiin that can ffe given the utterance of any public official that it is brief, pointed and businesslike. For the 'steenth time Diax has been "persuaded" to accept another nomiriation for president of Mexico, which is equivalent to election. There will bo no opposition it would be quick sui cide for any man to run against Diaz. It's all jjp with tho government of Persia. The rcvolutiona- ries, according to the cable news, have been reinforced by an Americarand anrishman, and that combination spells sklddoo for somebody. iff o Eugene wants to keep right on paving and boosting and the former is themost effective kind of boosting. Public im provements increase property values and attraction! seekers and inveors. ' Not only is the prohibit 'n Qave holding its own, but it's till a-rjsjng in most ploTes where spring cloctions jyve bee 1 held, though they did sweep it out of a few Massachusetts towns. q John Bull is inclined to bo greedy. Ho now wants a fleet of airships as large as those of any two nations combined, in order to make the "tight little island" safo from attack. The new Cuban president, in his first messago to congress, talks like a man who hopes everything will work around all right but is not offering to wager odds on it. President domes, of Venezuela, is getting cold feet and talk ing of retiring temporarily, which only goes to show how badly Castro has get the whole bunch frightened. ' An old maxim says "the better the day, the better the deed," but it would be mighty hard to convince tome people that pomoi lie u aa second-class matter. Sunday's excepted.
