"The state press association at its recent session condemned
Governor Chamberlain for vetoing the bill providing for the pub
lication of delinquent taxes, an action that was uncalled for.
Newspapers have no more right than any one else to be interest
ed in graft affairs. Albany Democrat. The Democrat is as
narrow in this comment as it is in every, view it expresses on
yublic questions. Ninety-nine out of every one hundred taxpa'y
ers want the delinquent list published, as a protection against
speculators in tax titles, and the governor seems to have vetoed
the bill solely to "get even" with the Oregonian, of Portland,
where there is a long list of delinquents. Besides this, newspa
pers are! the recognized mediums of publicity in all such mat
ters, ad have a right to be offe'aded when a publio official, for

tfaem the legal bcatiBS they are justly entitled to. If the

new United Stales minister to the Ar

graduating from the Yale Law School

corporation lawyer. He became ac
tive fh Republican politics, and in
the two McKinley campaigns he or
ganized the Lawyers' Sound Money
Club, and was onff of the commit
tee of five that conducted the mon
ster, business parades of those two
campaigns. Mr. Sherrill was a noted
athlete in his college days and after
his graduation he continued his in
terest in athlefic sports.' He was the
originaor of the idea of international
inter-university track ahletic meet
ings, having arranged the Yale-Oxford
match in London in 1894, and
the Yale-Cambridge match in New
York the following year.
