Berger Tells How Big Firm Was Built in Four Years and From Nothing "We have the beat hardware store In the state In arraniement and con venience," was the statement of F. J. lierner, president of the Berger Bean Hardware company, when ask ed how the business had been built from nothing four years ago to the point where the store covers about 13,000 square feet floor space in the White Temple, (the I. O. O. F. building), which is considered tne fine.it in Eugene. "Well," he said, ' I paid close at tention to business, and devoted my whole time to it. The next big step was when the firm Incorporated two years ago. "Our new home here Is the final achievement," he continued, as he surveyed the well lighted and im- nroved store from the smallest can of New Bra paint back In the corner, to a buggy resting in the balcony. "But we are are not done; we intend to continue making Improvements, ahead of the business, If we can." When asked what the total busi ness for the last year had been, the president of the company, answered with a thoughtful smile, "People would not believe it. If I told you, so I hardly think it wise. It's big though. It must be large, you know, to keep up this establishment." When asked how many men it took to handle the big stock which ranges from a bird cage to a threshing ma chine, "Seven," Including Mr. Bean and myself," he tersely answered "Bilt we have to put on extra help now and then," he added with pride. Among the features of the store are 224 lineal feet of show -window 17 feet high, or 3,800 square feet of glass; 10 'feet of fine show cases, fit for any candy store; a hydraulic elevator In dimensions, fourteen by ar.,eTw- ctoam hPAt: a hardware" room ororner for locks, which are displayeOnst as they I appear in a panel; and safe vault, large enough for a banking business "That builder's room," remarked the president of the company, is the only one in the stale outside 01 Portland, I understand. I have been all over Portland and San Francisco, and I only found one in Portland and two in the California city." "By the way," somebody else said, "Don't forget to say that we are go ing to place all our shelf goods in drawers, which will be dust proof." 'Hie Berger-Bean Hardware com pany formerly had their business home In what was known as the Hovev bulldine near Eighth on the emt side of Willamette street.
