Wyse Jones Preached Two Splendid Sermons Yes terday Singer Delayed Two great audiences greeted Evan gelist Jones at the Presbyterian church yesterday. At the morning service, the sermon was ou "Prayer, ,f and at the evening service. Mr. Jones spoke on "Soul Winning." The key to the evangelist's success is doubt less found in these two sermons. Humble dependence upou God to save men and by kind and manly efforts win men. The manner of these work ers is such as to commend Itself to the sanest Judgment of Christians who prefer permanent work to the more practical spectacular and short lived. it was the general opinion of those who heard the sermons yester day that Mr. Jones la one of the ab lest men who ever preached In Eu-gene. Prof. Spear aud wife wore un avoidably detained and many were disappointed in not hearing them but they arrived last night and will direct the singing, assisted by a large choir and instruments tonight. Beginning with Tuesday an after noon service will be held at the Pres byterian church at 3 o'clock. Ser vices each night at 7:30 with song service and preaching. lrTr lliiiiii iii 1Z ii ll MTTTT P it RIVER THREATENS THE CITY OF HARRISBURG Cutting Into Bank on Northeast Side Water System Is Being Extended Considerable damage Is threatened by the Willamette river at Harris burg. The river Is cutting Into the bank on the north-east side and Is only a few yards from a row of houses. Harrlsburg Is extending its water system. Outside of the mere cost of the pipe, the extension Is very cheap, for the soil is bo loose that a big plough suffices to dig the ditch. The road from Eugene to Coburg, and from that place to Harrlsburg, Is reported to be the best of all the highways north of Eugeno. rwww m ? :::::::::::::::::::::::::.HHj:g Mot d mirc rn m 11UU1 IV lUdlitt Ul Druggists Hotel Smeede Bldg. Smith has sold his two-story brick block on Willamette streets, across the alley from the Hotel Smeede, to J. H. Coleman, the well known capitalist, for $15,000, which Is a splendid advance over that he paid to C. J. Harhite for It only two or three years ago. Since buying the property Mr. Smith has built an ad dition to the building extending it back to Park Btreet, but even with this improvement, he made good money on the deal. The lower floor of the front part of the building is occupied by the Combination bar ber 3hop. BRITISH STEAMER ! LOST WITH CREW Newcastle, X. S. V., Dec. 2S. The writer points out that "Just as the mechanical world has changed and Improved, so the world of labor has advanced from the slavery of the laborer to the day of his absolute In dependence and now to thiB day, when he begins to take his proper place aB the capitalist-partner of his employer. We may look forward with the hope to the day when It shall be the rule for the workman to he partner with capital, the man of affairs giving Ills business exper ience, the worklngmnn In the mill his mechnnlcal skill, to the company, both owners of the shares and so far equally Interested In the success of their Joint efforts, eitch indispen sable, BO that without their co-operation success would be Impossible." "Co-partnership tends to bring a realizing sense of the truth to both labor and capital that their Interests, broadly considered, are mutual; and as far as the latter Is considered it may finally. In some cases, be all fur nished by those engaged In the works, which Is the .ueal that should be helfi in view the workman both capitalist and worker, employe and employer. --".; Ml "This, however, la not for our time. We are pioneers, whose duty Is to start the movement, leaving to our successors, Its full and free de velopment as human society ad vances. The first company so owned will mark a new era In the relations of labor and capital. We may not have to wait long for this experiment since it is In line with recent devel opments. The writer has no desire to embark again In business. Hut nothing appeals to him so strongly as this Ideal. He should like to address a body of workmen, many thousand In number, as all fellow partners." "The writer li convinced," Mr. Carnegie Bays in conclusion, "that this Is to be the highly ntlafactory and final solution. The first step In advance has already come In the nat ural progress of evolution no revo lution necesary and it Is earnestly pressed upon the attention of Intelli gent worklng-nien and their leaders, some of wirni feeni to have been misled Into devoting themselves to the advocacy of a system, admittedly unsulted to our day, which requires an organic change In the relations of Kocletv, and Indeed a thousand year. The experiment of labor and capital union workmen-capitalists has ex ceeded, so f , all expectations. Even the convlncd Socialist might, there fore, ball It as at least a step In the right direction, making the laborer's ponltlon better than before, saying to himself: let the future bring what It may; a l!rd In the hand Is often worth a whole flock In the bush.' Our Socialist c remedy Is for the fu ture; li t ii not forget this Is our d-allng with 'he present." "Such sf-roa to the writer the part of wisdom. ' Fred risk. Oregon timber lands bourg and sold.
