Dealers report a scarcity In tbe local market for tbe reason that most of the birds In the county were bought up for shipment to Portland, Seattle and San Francis co. One dealer stated this morning that Eugene has chipped out at least 20,000 pounds of dressed tur keys, about half of them going to Portland and the other half evenly divided between Seattle and San Francisco. The turkeys were not as numer ous in this county as usual, for some reason or another, . probably the weather during the early spring be ing too severe for the young ones soon after hatched. While the ship ments out of Eugene were as large as usual, there is a noticeable scarcity in the reall' trade. If the people do not make their purchases today or early tomorrow, they will have to eat chicken or goose for their Thanksgiving dinner. Raisers of turkeys received this year from 18 to 20 cents a pound for the birds, while they are selling In tbe retail market from 22 to 25 cents per pound. They brought 'a better price here this year than they ever have and even the local market has been higher than in Portland. This speaks well for this market. The price paid for the birds here is said to have been higher than paid in any other city ou the coast. HENEYWILL CONTINUE FIGHT ON GRAFTER GANG San Francisco, Iov. 23. The Call this morning prints the first inter view granted to the press by Francis J. Heney since the assistant district attorney was shot in Judge Lawlor's courtroom, November 13, by Morris Haas. After expressing devout thanks for his miraculous escape, Mr. He ney says: "In this great human battle against vice and corruption, let no one believe that the true source Is to be found in the Individual dyna miters, jury bribers,, kidnappers and assassins, and that their extermina tion means ultimate victory. Such being ate but the bubble emanating from the pool of filth that has been years In making. The seed has been sown, mid we must reap tho harvest, but In gathering the tares, let us be satisfied with nothing but the roots. "It has been a terrible sacrifice, but if my blood has not been shed In vain; if the assassin's bullet bas suddenly disclosed to the public eye tho hideousness of the gigantic con spiracy to defeat the law, then I shall feel that I have not lived In vain; that my poor efforts have met with immeasurable benefit to my beloved city and state." The foregoing is a pnrt' of the statement which is published over Mr. Honey's signature. Tho wounded man Is well on tho road to recovery, and was able to walk about his room ntfthe hospital today. To his uiiei viener no scutea tnut no wa eager to get back to tho prosecution of the gralt cases again. How Is Your Digestion? TAFT'S VOTE LARGER THAN ROOSEVELT'S Portland, Nov. 23. That Presi dent- elect Taft received a greater number of votes at the latter elec tion than President Roosevelt did in 1904 is evidenced by the complete official returns. The figures show that Taft re ceived 62,350 as against 60,455 for President Roosevelt four years ago in Oregon. Taft's plurality, however, Is not as largo as that of Roosevelt, but this is accounted for from the fact that Bryan ran far ahead of Parker and not that Taft ran behind Roose velt. This year Bryan received 38,049, while Parker's vote four years ago was only 17,521 Taft's plurality is 24,481. Tbe Republican nominee also re ceived a majority of 14,071 over all other candidates.
