Ex-Senator Edward Caruiack, editor of the Teunessean, was shot and killed at 4 o'clock this afternoon on Seventh avenue north in front the I'olk Flats, by Robin Cooper, son of Colo nel Duncan 11. Cooper. Mr. Carniack was going north on Seventh street In front of the flats and Colonel Cooper and his sou Robin were ap proaching Seventh avenue on Union street. Soon after they came into sight of one another the shouting was begun, Robin Cooper, it is said, fir ing two shots and Senator Carniack one. Colonel Cooper, it is said, drew his pistol, but did not fire. Due to Kditoriul Attacks Senator Carniack fell to the ground, dying instantly. Robin Coop er was shot -In the right shoulder, but not badly wounded. It is understood that the trouble was one of the results of a recent Democratic gubernatorial primary, in which Carniack was defeated. Car mack, since he became editor of the Tennessean, has been caustic In crit icising what he called the Democratic machine, and had printed several edi torials about Colonel Cooper. Within the last few days, it Is as serted, Colonel Cooper notified Car mack that these editorial criticisms must cease. Another editorial refer ring to the colonel appeared in the paper this morning and it Is supposed to have been the immediate cause of the trouble. Assassin 27 Years Old As Senator Carniack fell at the edge of the street Colonel Duncan 13. Cooper put his arm around Holiin Cooper and both walked a few feet down Seventh avenue to Dr. K. G. Ford's, where the slight wound in Robin's shoulder was examined and treated. An ambulance carried the body of Mr. Carniack to an undertak ing establishment. Carmack's pistol, a 32-calibre, was found lying at his side with two nhnmlwrR emtitv when the iwulv v'!, picked up and turned over to an I symptoms as backache, blood disor ffi..r,.
