HNCORPOlUVTED- . at the morning service. Drs. C. H. T. and C. H. Atwood. i father and son, charged with per- i Coiigi-cirniioiuil l..,,..i, forming unlawful loperatlons in hospital conducted by them at Tre mont station, were taken before Jus tice of the peaoe Olson yesterday af ternoon for arraignment on a charge of "indecent and immoral acts which openly outrage public decency and are injurious to public morals." Both waived arraignment and were bound over to the grand jury under bonds of $1000 each, which they furnished, says today's Oregonlan. While held nominally under the "public nuisance" law, it Is hoped by the District Attorney's office to launch a more serious charge within the next few days. The charge now pending is merely nominal. The ni thoritles are firm in believeing that the Atwoods caused the death of Pearl Lamb, who died as the result of criminal malpractice. Evidence Is also at hand to connect these men with the serious illness of a young woman who has been hovering be tween life and death for some con siderable time. An Inquest Into the death of Miss Lamb was to have been held yester day by the Coroner, but was post poned to allow more time for the gathering of evidence. It will likely be held this morning. Deputy Dis trict Attorney Fitzgerald said yester day that In the event the Coroner's jury connectin the Atwoods with the death of Miss Pearl Lamb, the charges against them will be changed to manslaughter. Attorney J. A. Finch of the firm of Plggott &Flnch, representing Drs. C. H. T. and C. H. Atwood. insist that their clients are conducting a thoroughly moral and Indeed a bene ficial Institution. A number of the most prominent women of Portland have been their patients, they say. "The Drs. Atwood conduct a ma ternity home, and try to avoid re ceiving such cases as that of the Lamb girl from Eugene. She secured admittance by false rep resentation, and the doctors do not want such cases. The statement that the Drs. At wood are no licensed physicians is absolutely untrue, for they are gradu ates of medical schools and have li censes to practice as well as any oth er physlcinns In Portland. Among the patients they have treated at their hospital are the wives of bankers and various other prominent profession al and business men. They would not object to the publication of the list of their patients if the patients them selves would not object. Their books and records are open to everyone." . u. riiiKerlon. pastor.
