No one who is looking for real estate in this city fails to read and consider the real estate ads. . Scarcely a sale occurs that is not, in some way, promoted or brought about by a classified ad. Without the influence of the little ads, real estate transactions would be hard to bring about not be cause of any fault or flaw in the properties them selves but because the "right buyers" could not be quickly or effectively found. A solemn pontifical mass ot thanksgiving was eele.brated in the Cathedral ot the Holy Name this morning Ir, commem oration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Roman Catholic diocese of Boston. A number of i KiHi-iiu .,.,.1 ...!.. . , s oi,.. uiui-i iiuuuui-m ire occupied seats in tne sanctuary dur-i ing the mass. Mgr. DlonieJe Falco- nlo, the apostolic delegate to the United States, was the celebrant. The sermon was preached Jiy Arch bishop O'Connell. The big cathedral was crowded when the services began. The pro cession to the cathedral was imnres- slve. Several hundred priests of the Boston diocese led and were fol lowed by several hundred vlsltlne priests and members of various or ders. The bishops, archbishops, and Mgr. Falconio brought up the rear. J The celebration of the centennial Is to continue five days. It will con clude Sunday with a great parade of the Catholic societies of Boston and ! vicinity. In the intervening davs i there will be a succession of religious1 services and historical exercises. The century just closed has been an epoch of marvellous growth ani: sustained prosperity for the Cath-I ollc church In this section. When the diocese was created in 1S0S, with the Rev. John Choverns as the first bishop, it embraced New Hampshire and Vermont, Massachusetts, then including the district of Maine. Rhode Island and Connecticut. In the whole diocese there were bnt three churches, with a total of 720 communicants. So rapidly did the Catholic popu lation grow throughout New Eng land during the past century that there are now seven large and Im portant dioceses In the territory which was but one diocese in 1S0S. Now the diocese of Boston alone ohbraces 248 churches and the Cath olic population has Increased to 850, 000. ln the diocese there are 600 priests and 1600 members of differ ent orders of nuns.
