The warmest political battle Indiana has seen in recent years will wind up to morrow night with parades and ral lies in every city and town through out the length and breadth of the state? The great battle in Indiana this year is the election of the atnio I ticket. The presidential contest, of 'course, has not been neglected, but ;the leaders here feel that the uation ;al ticket will take care of itself. The :main fight is for control of the leg islature. If the Republicans win, 80 ;of the 90 counties of the state nmv i exercise local option and James A. nemenway win oe returned to the United States senate if thf nn crats win, there will be no apprecia ble change in the liquor situation. The law enacted by the Republican legislature provides for local option by counties, while the Democrats ad vocate local option uy townships. Be tween the two there is a great differ ence In the practical results, as It is generally admitted that the township plan would not bring about prohibi tion in any of the larger cities and towns. The Republicans have made the li quor question the great Issue of their campaign. The Democrats, on the other hand, have paid little attention to the liquor Issue, but have made much ot the alleged extravagance in the Republican administration of the state's business. Both parties have made a thorough canvass of the sit uation during the present week, and according to the lenders, both are nleaseri with the at the Republican state headquarters ii. iimi i ne returns make the pros pects look brighter than four years ago, when Indiana went Republican by a large majority. The Democrats, on the other hand, appear well satis fled with th outlook and insist that a better showing for their ticket could not be desired. v NOTICE TO TAX PATERS Notice Is hereby given that the road poll tax, amounting to $3 Is now due from each male Inhabitant of the city of Eugene between fee ages of 21 and 60 years, ftcept as exempt bv law, and will become de linquent .less paid before tha tlrst day ofVJiecember, 1908.
