PRESENCE OF
' SURVEYORS IN COOS
CAUSES SPECULATION
The presence ot a surveying party
which came down from the Umpqua

gave rise to all sorts of railroad ru
mors, some declaring that they were
selecting a route for the Mill road
to Coos Day, others thut It Is a llar
rlman party, and others declaring It
was for some other railroad system.
The party wasn't talking and Just
who they are and what their object
Is had not been ascertained late this
afternoon.
The surveyors have seven pack
horses and were brought across the
bay on a scow. They did not stop
long after landing and not one of
the small party who s nw them land
ascertained any definite Information.
A. II. Powers, who came overland
with his wife, said that he under
stood that tho party was sent out by
the United tSates geologcal survey.
But the number of men ami the
equipment caused some doubt to this
report.
C. J. Mills said that the surveying
party did not belong to the Southern
Pacific. Marshfleld Times.

The sad news of the death in Port

Fish are said to be plenty on tide

enough water to bring the fish up to
the hatchery, though the last rise
took out all tho fnise racks.
Hrenton Lamb and Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Chaslaln are on Deadwood,
having been called here to attend the

It only needed a smoke to be habita

some charm about the job, as two of
the creamery men have got married
since working there.

WARM CAMPAIGN
N EARING CLOSE
IN INDIANA
Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 30. The
warmest political battle Indiana has
seen in recent years will wind up to
morrow night with parades and ral
lies in every city and town through
out the length and breadth of the
state? The great battle in Indiana
this year is the election of the atnio
I ticket. The presidential contest, of
'course, has not been neglected, but
;the leaders here feel that the uation
;al ticket will take care of itself. The
:main fight is for control of the leg
islature. If the Republicans win, 80
;of the 90 counties of the state nmv
i exercise local option and James A.
nemenway win oe returned to the
United States senate if thf nn
crats win, there will be no apprecia
ble change in the liquor situation.
The law enacted by the Republican
legislature provides for local option
by counties, while the Democrats ad
vocate local option uy townships. Be
tween the two there is a great differ
ence In the practical results, as It is
generally admitted that the township
plan would not bring about prohibi
tion in any of the larger cities and
towns.
The Republicans have made the li
quor question the great Issue of their
campaign. The Democrats, on the
other hand, have paid little attention
to the liquor Issue, but have made
much ot the alleged extravagance in
the Republican administration of the
state's business. Both parties have
made a thorough canvass of the sit
uation during the present week, and
according to the lenders, both are
nleaseri with the
at the Republican state headquarters
ii. iimi i ne returns make the pros
pects look brighter than four years
ago, when Indiana went Republican
by a large majority. The Democrats,
on the other hand, appear well satis
fled with th outlook and insist that
a better showing for their ticket
could not be desired. v
