Mr. Editor: We believe that "Old HI 1 r Obedlnh" has got It about straight. The cat (s the wrong kind of a cut to name "Evangelical." We don't wonder that "Old Hill" has Mnploton people all classified as on the road to "hell" when wo hear foul language among the children, men swear, women profane, and "lies" and liars ure heard everywhere. Sub-bath-hreaklng Is common, and fathers and mothers who come to church, or hnvo family prayer, or read the Dlblo aro the extreme exceptions and nenr- ly all who aro now trying to pride themselves in running a "union Sun day school dance all Saturday night into Sunday morning, wind up in a drunken row, kick out several win dow lights, and then try and pride themselves on running a "union" Sun day school, which some of them have not nttended inoro than a few times in six months. And more than once tho Sunday school has been run In Muplcton when the self-termed "un ion" people, "Old HUT and his family Included, had all bundled up and gone down tho river on n Sunday high time." You can easily see that "Old Hill" has measured 'em by the gospel, and found that "except they repent they shall all likewise perish." nut lot mo say that there are a few down hero that are on right lines who love Hod with all their heart. and serve him In purity, nnd but for these ufethinks the Lord would not have spared Mnploton this long. These few are kind of out In the brush nnd "Old Hill" hasn't found them yet. In closing let me say that "Old Bill" has his theology twisted, and he has not been to Sunday school often enough to get his history straight. He missed tho mark (Just a little! when he classed us all with himself ns on the road to hell, but ho Is certainly right when ho says the "cat is the wrong kind of a cat to name Kvanel- uai. Long Tom river. a stream which a few years ago was declared navigable, over which one of tho oddest drawbridges ever con structed was placed and upon the opening of which several thousand dollars was expended by the govern ment, is again n quiet country creek. Bridge tnrponlers nre at work build ing a solid bridge across old Lonir Tom, at the Pfouis lane, nnd the queer old drawbridge a few miles north is also a thing of the past. Just why these things are so is not very easily explained. The quanti ty of water is as great as Is needed to carry on light boating, and the coun try tnrough which this stream winds Its way Is large enough to support a Hue of freight boats. The citizens of this portion of the country, howev er, nre enthusiastic over a railroad, and apparently nre not able to see the benefits to be derived from an open river, with small boat or two carry ing tho products of southern Benton and northern Lane counties to mar ket, nt a minimum cost of transporta tion. It is almost a surety that within 10 years this waterway will again he opened to traffic, despite the fact that a railroad Is now being constructed Into this sntne section of the state. Just as soon as the larger ranches are divided into smaller holdings nnd this Is rapidly taking place a great er demand than ever will be heard by tho man who can figure out another scheme to open the Long Tom river to navigation.
