Busi ness reverses led his lather to emi grate to America with his family in 1869. He settled in Brooklyn, where young Bolt received his education. At the age of 13 years he became office hoy in the employ of the Western Union Telegraph Company. He de voted his spare time to study and soon became stenographer. At the age of nineteen he became editor of the Brooklyn Magazine, which he sold after a few years, lo become connected with the publishing firm of Henry Holt Co., and later with that of Charles Scrihner's Sons. At the age of twenty-five he became the editor of a magazine published in Philadelphia for women.
