Edward William Bok, the well
known Philadelphia editor and writ
er, was born In the little town of
Helder, near Amsterdam, Holland,
on October a, 1S63. ins great
grand-father was admiral-in-chief of
tho Dutch navv. his grandfather a
chief justice 'of the Supreme Court
and his father one of the ministers or
the court of K(ng William ill. Busi
ness reverses led his lather to emi
grate to America with his family in
1869. He settled in Brooklyn, where
young Bolt received his education. At
the age of 13 years he became office
hoy in the employ of the Western
Union Telegraph Company. He de
voted his spare time to study and
soon became stenographer. At the
age of nineteen he became editor of
the Brooklyn Magazine, which he
sold after a few years, lo become
connected with the publishing firm
of Henry Holt Co., and later with
that of Charles Scrihner's Sons. At
the age of twenty-five he became the
editor of a magazine published in
Philadelphia for women. He has nl
so won recognition on the lecture
platform, principally by his talks
about "The Keys lo Success." ad
dressed to young men.
