The crime was one of the most brutal in the police annals of Portland. The accused man apparently Is confident of acquittal. The police and the district attorney's office believe, on the other hand, that they have a sure case against Ma.'tln. Certain important witnesses are said to have left Portland and It Is insinuated that they may have been .ipii'i'.td away by Martin's relatives, who are wealthy." The career of Martin reads like pages from a yellow-back romance. He is a son of a former New York couti actor, 35 years of age, a grad- Eugene uaie or wesi roini, armor expert ai Sandy Hook, a graduate of Ford ha ml college and the New York Law School. At West Point he was a fav-i onto with his classmates. He grad uated In 1S9S and saw active service In Porto Rico. He received medals for saving two comrades during the war with Spain. Upon his return to the United States, his engagement was announced to Miss Katherlue Tiavtrs, daughter of Francis C. Trav el's, ;v prominent member or isew York societ'. Hut the marriage nev er took place. The young officer be gan trading in Wall Street, and soon he was hard pressed for funds. He was accused of using the funds of liio lost exchange at Fort Hancock, X. V, of which he had charge, was tried by court martial, found guilty and dismissed from the service. It was after his dismissal from the avmy in 1000 that the most spectac ular part of Martin's career began. He married CJussle McKee, better known in New York as the ' Pool room Queen." Within a year he was arrested for forgery and sentenced to a year in jail. While he was serv ing his sentence his wife began ac tion for divorce. The proceedings were brought to an abrupt close in 1903 by the death of the "Poolroom Queen." After his release from prison Martin remained around New York for a year or so and was sever al times arrested on suspicion of be ing Implicated in burglaries and oth er crimes. Finally he was persuad ed to leave the metropolis. Then began his career In the West, which was as checkered as the chap ters he had left behind him in New York He was suspected of the mur der of his partner In the Thunder Mountain mining district In Idaho, and In 1305 was Imprisoned In an Idaho Jail several months on a bur glarv charge. The parents of Martin ..htnin.xi for hi ill an Interest In lar,n, Thunder Mountain property. It was while engaged in the develop ment of this property that his part ner disappeared. Martin was strong ly suspected of murder, but as the bodv of his partner could not be found, he was finally released, ror a while, before coming to Portland, he lingered about I.ewlston. .Moscow, and Wallace. After his arrival here the former army lieutenant was employed tem porarily In one of the city offices. His fondness for drink and drugs continued to bring him notoriety from time to time Nathan Wolff, a prosperous pawn broker and Jeweler, was murdered In his store on the night of rrirlav Ma I.
