It costs money to run a news paper In this age of trusts and un ionism. But perhaps the Standard knows about this. It Is said that Sir James Giant very much Interested the learned members of the British Association of St-ieiice with a description of his machine for the renewal of youth. Sir James calls his machine the "neu rostone." If he and the British sci entists will come to America they will find that advertisements of sim ilar fakes have been extant for at least thirty years. V. E. Glasscock, compromise can didate for governor of West Virginia, is also collector of internal revenue, and It is said will conduct his cam paign without resigning that office. Vet It has just been officially an nounced from the White House that the president will not stand for fed eral officers running for elective of fice. Maybe Mr. G. has not heard about that. Former Senator David B. Hill's re turn to active politics, even in an ad visory capacity, will recall much to the old-timers. Few know the game better that Davy, though he would not recognize a card Index If he met it In the road. French newspapers are beginning to wonder what's gone wrong when the number of suicides at Monte Car lo fall below seven a week. To go broke and to "croak" are the ex pected things from visitors to the gamblers' paradise. If giving a baboon beer and whis key be Inhumane treatment, as claim ed by the president of the Washing ton Humane Society In a recent case, we could easily produce a bunch of men hankering for Inuhmane treatment. In saying there was no water In Standard Oil stock, and that the only company he controlled had not been much of a dividend producer, His Oiliness made It mighty hard to be lieve the other things he said. Two and a half millions deposited In Eugene banks tells a story of any thing but a financial stringency. We are growing faster than any other city In the Northwest, and have the money to back It up with. The United States treasurer, Chas. H. Treat, Is credited with saying that we should eat seven times a day. It Is supposed, from his utterance, that the job of treasurer ,is even better than was ever suspected. Dr William Osier has been elected ljid high rector of the University of Edinburgh. And this for the man who, by his own dictum, should have been chloroformed on his last birth day. Next thing we'll be having chesty "Billy" Hearst, the bad boy of the political school, setting himself up as the only genuine issue-maker. There is always hope for the fool who has sufficient control over his tongue to keep others from finding it out. fHIS HATH IX HISTOKY Octolicr 1 1768-1799- 1890- 1S37- 1847- 18S3- 1884-1890-1899- 1901- -British troops landed at Bos ton from Halifax. -Kimis unoate, statesman, uorn in Ipswich, Mass. TO WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY i Salem, Sept. 29. Ex-State Senator Robert A. Booth, who has given so, many munificent gills to Willamette University, has announced, through 1 Dr. Fletcher Homan, president of the university, that he will give $111, OUD as a starter for a second $100, 000 endowment. At present $I0U, of tbe endowment has been raised. On condition that the first $100,000, was raised, two loyal Willamette men' agreed to give $2G,00U each on the I next $150,000, which would make the endowment reach the quarter : million mark. The gift of Senator ; Booth sturts the movement which is ; expected to result In that amount be-1 lug raised. During the session of tho Oregon conference Senator Booth gave $5000 to an Irreducible confer ence claimants' fund, making $15,000 in all that he has given during the. last week. When the senator appear-; ed on the floor of the conference to plead the cause of Willamette ho was , given on ovation that b.ouglit tears to nis eyes.
