Fifteen thousand population by January 1, 1910, will he the slo gan for the campaign during the year. The matter of continuing the work so well commenced was discussed at length at the meeting, and every one who spoke was enthusiastically in fa vor ot It. Messrs. SvarveruJ. Voran. Dempster, Campbell, Wintermeler and others made enthusiastic ad dresses. When it came to a vote there was not a dissenting voice. The club endorsed the proposition of the Southern Pacific Company to conduct a demonstration train through the valley, demonstrating dairying, etc. W. M. Green, W. A. Bell and W. J. .Gibson were appointed as a commit tee to co-operate with the Lane County Horticultural Society to ar ronge for an apple exhibit from Lane county at the Seattle exposition, the matter having been suggested by Fruit Inspector Ileebe. The club confirmed the appoint ment of D. A. Puine and J. H. Har tog, made by the governor, as dele gates to the Trans-.Mlsslsslppl con gress. President Williams will name four delegates from the club, one of them to be President Camp bell, of the University. It. It. Knox's resignation as secre tary of the club was accepted, as he has gone to Albany to reside. His successor waa not selected. Manager Hartog stated that he had received word from the S. P. Co. to the effect that aa soon as plans are completed for beautifying and parking the depot grounds the com pany would begin the work. Flower bedB and rare bushes will be planted. The amendment to Increase the membership from $10 to $20 was laid on the table. The membership la now 23D, with nine applications pending. Hill, of the Hill Gun Store, Charles E. Jones, of the Pacific Monthly, and young Turpening re turned last evening from their hunt 011 Huckleberry mountain, on the North Fork of the Willamette river. They got plenty of deer and a num ber of bear. Voting Turpening had an exciting exiKMicnce with three bears which attacked him. He saw two cubs up & tree and shot one (lead. The other one he only wound ed and It set up an outcry. Turpen ing expected to have an encounter wllh the mother of the cubs, but wus not looking fur three to come after him. The first one that came he killed with the first shot and the sec ond one he badly wounded, but when the third one came upon him the shell stuck In the gun unil he had to run. He climbed to the top ot a big rock and soon afterward getting the shell out he began to pump lead Into the bear, dispatching It lu quick or der. Young Turpening Is a high school student and Is aged only 17 years. He kept his nerve splendidly through the trying experience and was cooler than iniiiiy an oljer and more experi enced hunter.
