If sin h is the case, they explain, It will be due entirely to the fact that the contest is fouisht out on state Issues and without regard to the questions that figure In the na tional campaign for the presidency. Kor this reason Vermont Is a much more reliable barometer by which to forecast the Nevember results. In Maine there are several state Issues around which the election revolves, while In Vermont the local Issues at stnke are not nearly bo prominent. For purposes of comparison it is Interestlnn to note the record of the Maine elections for some years past. In 1N80 the Democratic-Greenback fusion party carried the state in Sep tember, while the Republicans elect ed their president in November. In ISS4 tho Republicans carried Maine In September, duo probably to the fact that .lames (1. Ululna was run ning for the presidency, but In No vember Cleveland was elected presi dent. In lS!)2Mnlne was Republican by only 12,f93 In September, seemingly foreshndowitiK the election of Cleve land to the presidency In November. Since 1RU2 the Republican majorities In Maine in September have been very large, raiiKlnK from 4X,246 In 1896 and 84,192 In 1900. to 25.800 In 1904. The elections since 1888 seem to make tho state fairly barometric In character, and yet there are so many exceptions thnt Its fall elections are not now watched with as much Inter est as those of Vermont. Issues of the Cninpalurii Augusta. Me., Sept. 12. The elec tions in Maine, Including the choice of representatives in congress, will bn held Monday. Tho canipnlgn closes today with rousing meetlngH In every nook and corner of the state. There is admittedly some anxiety among the Republicans over the out come, and corresponding plensant ex pectations on the part of the Demo crats. No Republican Is, however, willing to admit that there Is the slightest chance for the Democrats to carry the slate. Krom their view point It Is only a question of a large or Kinall Republican plurality. Tlie Republican candidate for gov ernor is Hert M. Fernnld, of West Po land, a wealthy calmer and business ed. that tho state has been unpnee- dentedly prosperous during the out lawry of the saloon, and that there is no good reason for allowing the elec torate to pass on the election again. The Democrats say there is a law amount of drunkenness In Maine. that the savings hanks deposits make a poor showing In comparison with other states, that prohibition is a mere political football and that no harm can come from re-Kiibmlssion, because If the state Is still in favor of prohibition it will have the oppor tunity to say so again at the polls. One other local issue of considera ble importance Is that of state ap propriations. The Democrats com plain that tho expense of running the state under Republican rule has more than doubled In the past few years. The Republicans say that this ex pansion of the appropriation account Is justified. The only congressional fight of much Interest Is that In the Third dis trict, represented by Edward C. Uur lefgh, who has geen in the bouse since tho Fifty-fifth congress. In the last election his plurality was but 1800 and this year the Democrats have centred their efforts on his defeat.
