The people of Cuua Bay themselves are largely respou ,..i., f,,r their isolation from the world, having defeated every at tempt of Roseburg to build a road over the mountain, when united ef fort might have been successful. A gentleman from 1'ortlaud who returned last night from an automo bile trip to Foley Springs, told a (ird representative that there would be hundreds of auto parties from the metropolis visiting that re sort annually if a reasonable amount of money was spent in improving the road. He thinks it would not cost a large sum to clear the stumps and stones out of the highway, and and put it in fair shape. He also estimated that each of these autoists would spend $100 in the county, which would mean a large revenue in the aggregate. "Let us' have peace," say the Eng lishmen, and at the same time the Airnlinns are proclaiming to the world that Uncle Sam and the na tive nf Australia and New Zealand combined, can whip all the Mongo lians in both Japan and China, If thev Dresume to attempt to take control of the commerce of the Pa cific. This may be the way to main tain neace. but if an Individual started out In the world with that sort of talk he would get a fight be fore be bad gone three blocks. , Of course, it had to rain this week because the Second Southern Oregon district fair is in session at Marsh- field. In some fifteen years there have been but one or two fairs held that have not been more or less marred by rain. As a producer of moisture the state fair Is a third-rate piker compared with the district show. The hides of cattle shipped on the hoof from the United States to Great Britain are 'being '.re-shipped, ' such is the scarcity. This is due to the demand, and is done despite the 15 per cent duty. It Is reported that South American hides are being brought into this country In an at tempt to meet the call. This Philadelphia marching club which has engaged hotel accommo dations In Washington for TafCs in auguration is entitled to the "soon er" medal. It may be none of our business, but we'd like to know whether a deposit was made. Major Minna Mascot is the name bestwed on the trick mule given to Mr. Bryan by the Minnesota State Agricultural Society, but, we take it, the mule is only expected to make good on the last section of the triple name. When the millennium comes. campaign songs will have to be ap proved by a board of competent crit ics. Until then, the public will have to exercise patience, and fight the desire to do a homicidal stunt. Some might suspect from Frank .MItchcock's frequent visits to Saga more Hill that he was a mUhty hunter, but we have an Idea that he Is merely givi'W tips on bow to keep a card index of the game. Mr. Bryan finishes one speech before he begins another," says a press correspondent at Fairview farm. Which the same would Indi cate that the colonel Is finishing them up pretty rapidly. An article on "How an explorer knows when he reaches the pole" makes It pertinent to ask. how the writer found out? If he has been there, we haven't heard of It. Governor Fort, of New Jersey, may be a doughty warrior, but he has lnl vet succeeded In capturing the Atlan tic City Fort, manned by the wide open brigade. Everybody is satisfied with the quantity and quality of Itichey Creek water except the fellows who don't know anything about either. Circumstances have made it per-ft'i-tly safe to predict a considerable tailing off in the negro vote of Springfield. Illinois. Let credit lie given where d:i". Ue. o Advertisements, Like Clocks, Should Keep Running A store's advertisements tell the people what is 'doing'' at that store what is new, what is inviting, why today is a good time to visit thf store. People look for the uds to tell them these things just as naturally ns they would look al u clock to tell the time. Sometimes a clock does not run sometimes a store's ad does not run. A "rim-duwu" dock or ad are about equally unsatisfactory, unservlvuublu, misleading. Curious thing about it is that a merchant who would think it absurd to have a run-down" or out-of-repalr clock will, some times, deliberately let his ad stop running. It's not wise, nor good busliHss, nor defensible on any known grounds but It Is sometimes done. WANTED ( onUnuel) ( ANTED TO RENT A big farm on shares, for from 3 o 5 years. Address "C.
