TEN YEARS OF EFFORT If, BLACK BUTTE MINES o In the foothill of the Calapjola Irnouniains on th roast fork of the j Willamette river, 10 miles south I Cutagc drove, a great mine has been carved out of the num. It has taken 10 long years of faithfully devoted work, and a pile of the yellow metal, In do It; hut a Kreat Industry has been established whlrn will (five lueratlve employment to men and sustenance for their fam ilies, probably for many years after the man who has pioneered It has been gathered to his father. ' Against all odds, discourage-; menu and difficulties, of which there have been plenty, as In all' work of this kind, the development j of the mine has gone steadily for-! ward. Not a day since the, proper-1 ty, nearly 10 years ago, .came Into the, hands of one of Its present own ers, William II. Dennis., formerly of Spokane, Wash., has work ceaacd. Hundreds of thousands of dollars' huve been paid out for labor and supplies In the southern end of l.ano county. The valley between Cottage Grove and illack Unite Is one of the most prosperous and up-to-diite fanning sections of Lane county. Every far mer and farmer's son has had a Job of work when he wanted It. Two tel ephone lines, free rural mall deliv ery, express, nnd one of the beat, wagon roadH In. the state, are the direct results of Mr. Dentils' enter-' prise. Collage drove, Kugcne and , even Shoe Hiring Valley have all' coinn In for a share of the bene fits. Hundreds of thousands of tons of ore are blocked out, ready to be winnowed for the smelter. The great smeller Is completed and In operation, and the stream of liquid silver has begun lo flow Into the markets of the world. The first car load was shipped last week to New York. The mines are at tho head of the Coast Fork valley. Illack Butte mountain, densely fir-tree-clad from Its base to its summit, rises majesti cally to' a nelgth of 8:7 fit! feet above sea level. Quoting from the report of an eminent geologist: "In a NKWPOHT WH'IKTV KVKNTH Oh' AHT WKKK During the early pnrt of tho week Floyd llushnell Davis entertained a party of his friends at a moonlight tally-ho party up the bench. The vein Ik 4 00 feet wide, and haa been proved fir over two in Ilea In length. Other parallel and Intersecting veins have been proven and developed on the 2,000 aires comprising the Illack llutto property. Over five tulles of tunnels, raises, shafts and winzes have been driven, and yet all this vast amount of work Is only as a fe want-holes In com parison to the enormous size of the ore bodies. Of course, It Is to be expected, so great a mass of ore Is naturally low grade as to mineral values, and the owners have developed It on a low gradft basis. Nevertheless, the mine produces some of the richest quick silver ore found In any part ol, the world. Nearby TIiiiImt Holding. ' In addition to the value of the mine, large timber holdings have been acquired which alone will be worth a handsome sum In a few years. Also partially developed Is a water power system which la calla ble of supplying not only all the re quirements of the mine, but also sufflcent power for electric trans portation from Eugene to Oakland. Tint mine, reduction plant and vil lage of Illack Unite, are now lighted by electricity generated by a Leffel tn rlil lie operated by this power. The smelter, or reduction plant us It Is called, has a capacity of 80 tons per 2 4-hour day. Hut this Is said to he only a beginning. Ad tional furnaces are to he erected, In the near future, for 300 or 400 tons ner day. The quantity of ore ex posed more than Justifies it. The type of plant to be used will be the "Dennis Roasting Furnace," an In vention of the manager of the mine. As a place of residence Hlack Ilutte has all the charms of a sum mer mountain resort, lovely climate, beautiful scenery, splendid roads, nearly painted cottages, and the fin est mountain water. Laborers and their families hava all the conve niences and comforts of (own life, and much more, and are fortunate to find such favorable conditions of living. Oregon Journal.
