EAST TWELTH STREET BEING GRADED East Twelfth street, between Oak and Pearl, Is being grnded by Carson Mathews for the city. The opening of this portion of the street has been the cause of much litigation dining the pnst few years. The city ordered it opened about four years ago, claim ing that the original owner dedicated the street to tho city. The Christian hilra contested the opening of the thoroughfare anil brought suit in the circuit court seeking io enjoin the city. The city won and the cape was taken to the supreme court, resulting in a victory for the illy again. The street has In en open tor a year or more, but up to the present time has reinaine.l unimproved. ELEVEN HUNDRED MILITIAMEN TO GO INTO CAMP MOTERMAN IS VICTIM Of I Portland, Aug. 3. Eleven hundred i National Guardsmen of Oregon left i for American Lake, Washington, to I day to participate In the annual field ' maneuvers. The troops consist of jthe Third and Fourth regiments, and i during the maneuvers the Third reg iment will be In command of Colonel I harles E. McDonnell, of Portland, and tho Fourth by Colonel Geo. O. Voran, of Eugene. , FIRST FIRE ALARM IN SEVERAL WEEKS The first fire alarm In Eugene (or several weeks waa sounded today at 11:15 o'clock. The roo( o( the wood shed at the residence occupied by Professor Ford and faintly at the cor ner of East Sixth and Oak streets had caught (Ire and the nelghbora seeing it, turned In an alarm. The blaie was put out by a stream from a gar den hose before the engine got there. Professor Ford had aet a pile of pa pers afire In the street a short time beforehand and It la presumed that a piece of burning pnper was blown to the roof of tho woodshed, and Ig nited the dry shingles. The damage w us practically nothing, as only a place not a foot square was burned.
