When com pleted the interest charges will be paid, not by taxes, but through water rentals that in the past have gone to fill the coffers of a private corpora tion. It will give Eugene something to boast of and to advertise. Just as Portland makes capital of its Bull Hun water, giving us an additional claim to the title of the home city of Oregon. It will settle a question that will be the cause of agitation as long as the city stands, because a well sup ply will never be satisfactory, and will meet with increasing difficul ty the needs of a growing population. Pumping plants are expensive to op erate, and have constantly to be re newed and enlarged. As we under stand it, it Is not expected that It will require all of a bond issue of $500, 000 to cocplete a gravity system, but the council wishes the authority to sell additional bonds to the amount necessary to complete the works, if there is a deficiency after -the $160, 000 available is expended, and that before the bonding proposition is again submitted Engineer Kelsey will have completed his engineering work and submitted final figures on the cost of the complete system so that the voters will know exactly what amount is to be Invested. The acquittal of Senator Booth and his brother, Henry, would naturally be a matter of gratification to their many friends throughout the state, under any circumstances, and it is es pecially so since the cases were so one-sided that the publicity given the government's evidence has amounted to a complete vindication of the de fendants. In neither trial was any evidence introduced to offset that of the government witnesses and yet the jury had no difficulty in arriving at a verdict of acquittal. In fact, the whole affair seems to have been the futgrowth of a political controversy involving the Mitchell and anti-Mitchell factions, the indictments against the Booths not having been brought in good faith, so that .Iud;;c Wolverton would have done himself credit to have granted the motions made for non-suit In both raises. As it Is the senator and hi3 brother will be held in higher public esteem than ever, since their public and prlvai' records have been thoroughly Inves tigated by the secret service agents, backed by relentless prosecutors, and the result of the promsled exposures has been as rank a farce as was ever aired In court. The records of few public officials could have undergone the same searching Investigation without bringing to light any actions of n questionable character, and therein lies the vindication of the defendants, who have been the objects, not of ,i legal prosecution, but of persecution carried on vindictively and relentlnss ly for years with alL Its attendant worry of suspense and apprehension. "England ravor- Turks," says a headline over a cablegram dealing with the raising of the Macedonian question In the house of commons. That's nothing new. England - has been playing the same game f.ir years and It has kept the Turkis'.i empire from getting smashed to smithereens more than once. Those two Chinese girls who nave matriculated In the Cornell summer school and are outdresslng the whole bunch wearing the newest creations of the Paris fashion-makers, at that won't do a thing in the trouble making line when they gel back home. iJiaz has had the leader of the op Position party In Mexlro locked up. charged with complicity in the !aH' f air-flush revolution, nnd the ih'inan Is liable to m et with an ar Idenial death" at any. time. Now maturely and demurely You may journey quite securely, Where each mighty, murmuring breaker Mentions to some ticket taker What you ought to pay. "Come on fellers! Let's go swim min'!" Prior to his election to the throne by the Nor wegian people in 190 r . he was Prince Charles of lienmark. the second sou ol the present ruler of Denmark. He was educated for the navy and was known as one of the most popular nnd democratic members of the royal families of Europe. In 1S9 he was married to Princess Maud, a third daughter of King Edward VII of Great Britain. There was consider able opposition to the marriage, as Maude was the daughter of the lilt tin king of England and Charles was on ly a Danish prince. At that time no one dreamed of the brilliant future in store for Prince Charles. After the marriage Prince Charles was well received in England. Expenses incurred by the dep uty fire wardens are horns by the sec tions over which they have jurisdic tion. Before the present board was created county clerks had authority to issue fire permits aud as a result conditions were very unsatisfactory. In many cases the county clerk did not know the conditions when he is sued the fire perimt, and In a number of cases permission to build fires was allowed Ill-advised.
