I BE1) I.KTTKlt DAY IX KUCiKXK'S 'IIISTOKV.' . I . Yesterday was in all respects a red letter day for Eugene, when the Ugliest railroad . officials in the country took notice of the occasion. General Manager Kruschnitt, of the Hjrrinian lines wired from the East his congratulations and well-wishes, mil General Manager O'Brien of the Northwest, was one of -the most pleised and enthusiastic of the Port Uad excursionists. Portland speak ers at the dinner predicted that many of those present would live to see Eugene a city of 50,000 people and the spirit of our citizens was coiu nented upon by every visitor in the lost favorable terms. The interest and friendship of the railroad peoplameans a great deal far the future ofEugene, when It is tdmltted that one of the first of the proposed new Harriman lines to be constructed In the west, will be the Oregon Eastern, extending down in to California, via Klamath Falls, as veil as eastward to connect with the Oregon Short line at Ontario. With the terminus of this great system in Eugene or Springfield, or perhaps between the two towns, soon to be connected by a street-railway, this city must become the most important Interior jobbing point in the west, as well as a great milling and manufac turing center. Therefore, the friend ship of the railroad magnates will be in essential'' factor in our future srewth, their interest and assistance being all that is needett to make a great city here within the next ten years. A man living in the vicinity of San Jose, (Calif.) has discovered that the bite of a rattlesnake Is a sure anti dote for Insanity. He Aas tried it and knows what he is talking about. It is related that this man, James Gillman, by name, became mentally unbalanced a number of years ago because of the death of Ills wife and certain financial troubles, and, al though not at all violent, he has be;n considered "off" since the inci dents alluded to. Not long ago he as out working on his farm in the mountains and came across a rattier, which bit him on the hand. The man rushed to the house, which was pre- ilded over by his daughter, anil thej roung lady bled the wound which s rapidly showing all the symp tom of poisoning. When the effects of the snakebite passed off if was found that the hithertoo insuuj 11. an s perfectly sane and he lias since that time been enjoying all his nn-n-W faculties. We presume the Austrian princess has stirred up Europe by eloping with an automobile agent, was actu ated by a de.flre to avoid future trouble with her machine. The factories of the glove trust can now work overtime all the time. The authorities of Pittsburg have or dered the smuttown police to wear white gloves when on duty. If the average female devotee of fashion had the' epigram habit, she would probably say: "I rare not who ridicules the newest fads In clothes, as long as I can wear 'em." Bryan has only to say the right word a promise of course, and the Tammany braves will be the loudest Bryan shouters at the Denver con vention. And now a good many are wonder ing if the Denver convention will have a democratic Frank Hitchcock and a steam roller. The United States ex-presidents. has no living Heart to Hear! Talks. By EDWIN A.
