After partaking of a light luncheon servetl hy the I.ailies' Auxiliary of the Commercial Cluh at the University ami attending the Commencement Day exercises, the l'ortlaml businessmen met for dinner at the Commercial Club, one bundled and thirty strong. Dr. D. A. l'aine acted as Toaslmuster, and as soon as everybody wa seated, a telegram, purKrting to lie from Wit. McMurray in Chicago, was received by "wireless." It expressed Mr. McMunay's regrets at not being in l'.ugcne and urged the speakers to "cut it short" in 'order not to miss the train, scheduled to leave Kugene at 7:15 p.m. This and other telegrams created considerable merriment. They were brought in at the proper moment by a neatly uniformed tiny messenger, wilh "lvugene Wireless" on his (or her) cap and enough Igold braid to satisfy a rear-admiral. Little Kika llartog was the j diminutive telegraph boy. The toastniaster at once called upon Charles S. Williams, Pres ident of the local club, w ho in his usual powerful way bade the visitors heartily welcome. Although duly warned not to speak for mote than three minutes. Mr. Williams got so inlere"ted in his subject that he hail to he forcibly put back on his chair bv a uniformed policeman. Mr. Williams was followed bv Tom Richardson, who responded in his characteristic vein. Mr. Richardson kept looking back of him, expecting the policeman to lake him bv the collar. t Dr. I.. I.. Whitson spoke next and paid the previous speaker an eloipicnl tribute as being the father of the promotion work now being actively done by all the largest towns in Oregon. He told of (he work of the Hoard of Ciovernors of the rnVnotion Committee, hut was interrupted by a "wireless" telegram from the Associated Press, Portland, reading: "Kvcning Telegram and Journal have extra-, out giving your speech in full. Have, you made it yet? Answer uick?" As J. C. Ainswortb arose to say a few words, a telegram was rc id by Toastniaster Paine, from the I'. S. National Hank of Port land reading: "Check presented today from a Kugene drygoods merchant and dealer in Imps, mohair ami chittim hark. Can't make head nor tail to signature. Wire best guess." Kvervbody at once pointed to S. II. I'tiendlv, who, amidst laughter, confessed that bis signature might be improved upon. President P. 1.. Campbell. I'. K. Peach and Judge K. . Potter next sioke in the order named and their remarks were confined prin cipally to L'lyversily matters. A telegraphic imptiry from the New Orleans Colion Kxchangc whether the rumor was true that "Cotton was up in Kugctie," also one from Dr. Dav from the McKcnzic river, were read by ihe Toast master. ' , Dr. Day bad been urged by C. S. Williams to go and catch a lot of trout for the dinner, but the banquet committee had already made other arrangements. His said telegram read: "Sav, do you want that trout for the Portlanders or not ? Answer tptick. Almost had a bite." Rev. I.uther R. Dyott, 11. W. Thomp'ou and Win. D. Wheel wright were the next speakers, followed bv lion. S. II. I'rieudly. who expressed Kugene's appreciation for the big vole given by Port land to the I'tiivcrsit v appropriation. I luring the dinner I )r. Paine also received ami read telegrams from the following : From Win. II. Tafl : "Can't come on the . pit. Trying hard though to get there in November." From W. J. P.ryan : "I'ndi tstand votir dinner is a $.' x) affair. I draw the line at $1 ). I can't come." From Win. McMurray: "Sorry can't lie with vmi to cut speeches short, as train leaves Kugene at 7 IZ- ' I never did." And fro'n tin- White House. W:i-!,iii::tou. I .
