"ll KSDAV, JIXK 1(1, Iiiiik j KICKS E DESIRES 1X)1 XOTHIXU KIIOKT OF GRAVITY WATER SYSTEM Eugene people want a gravity wa ter system and will- be satisfied with nothing less. That has been their dream and inspiration for years and it must and will be realized. The members of the ctty council under stood the situation, we think; if not, they should come to a full realization of the fact at onee and work consist ently to that end. Talk of pumping plants, wells and other make-shifts fill on deaf ears because it promises w permanent solution of a vexed oration that must be settled right, if at all. If Rrtchie creek and adjacent streams will furnish a s,upply of good water only for a few year3 to come It would no doubt be wise to ga ahead with construction work, with the un derstanding that with increas ed wealth and population farther extension of the mains would be made to the .Mc Kenzls river, well up into the nation al forest reserve, where the quantity and quality of the supply would ever be beyond criticism. What Is most liportant now is to take the first steii ;i a definite plan and go just as far our present financial resources will allow, keeping faith with the people who have so often and so em phatically expressed their wishes in this regard. C1XXKRS OCT Or MClv ,IV EASTERN STATES I According to the present outlook from the Eastern states the price of all kinds cf canned goods, such as fruit and vegetables, will be higher Is price during the coming fall and winter t.an ever before in recent !ears. (Hidden, who claims the long distance record f.,r automobillng. and has now taken to ballooning, the latter Is an "old man's recreation." Most of the young will be willing to let It go at that, and find 'theirs where the fall is shorter. The city has ordered the park streets paved a proper thing to do. Now let some one order a lot more of benches for the use of the publlc.who could then be kept off the grass, to tilt great joy of the caretaker there, whose work Is practically destroyed by the lounging crowds. Every real booster will take his coat off, sharpen his scythe and get after the grass and weeds that fringe the streets, like a real hero. There should be this week a copious shed dlndg not of blood but of patriotic perspiration. If all the commencement advice handed oi this month could be prop erly utilized, we could take one long ! jump right into the millennial; but alas, advice, like other things that cost nothing, is not appreciated.
