(By Dr. Franc Luclle Hard.) In the article of last week the cor nea, aqueous humor, and iris were talked about. This week the focusing apparatus of the eye will be taken up. Just back of the Iris is the cryatal Ine lens. This la not perfectly round but is longer than it is wide. It Is convex on both surfaces, the convex- thick. It is highly transparent, rath er soft and very elastic. The lens Is enclosed In a capsule that Is thin, transparent, brittle and ellKtic. It Is made up of one layer upon another of tissue that is so fine that i i dis tinguish tiie separate layi is power: ii iiiicroM-ope is required. The layers in iim placid one on another lIKlKe tile !e!W rceilllllO iltl OIllOll.i ;The layers at the center form a hard-j en- il nucleus lnit grow softer toward I 'the outside. As people grow older j ;the outer layers become more hurdi' and less elastic, constituting I'resliy-'1 jopln, which will be mentioned later.!! i On either side of the lens, as shown i i In the above drawing, is a tiny muscle w hich is aiiucneu to ll, caileu mo cil-; iary muscle. i When looking at an object somo( dUtance away, twenty feet or more.' the eyes are Bald to be at rest. That is, tho ciliary muscle is at Ua normal length. When reading It Is neces sary for the lens to become more con- j vex or more magnifying. Cnnse-! quently, the ciliary muscle, which ! holds the lens flat when the eye is at 1 rest, must relax, thus allowing the I lens to grow convex. !
