VKA)iS TO liEOOVEK 4 FKO.M DISASTER 4 I would regard an adverse 4 vote upon the pending Uni- 4 versity appropriation bill as a 4 disaster from which the state 4 would require years to recov- . er. The commonwealth of this time appears to be upon the eve of a development now ' too long delayed. It Is seek- ' ing capital and population ." from those sections of the country where enterprise and 4 education obtirlu, and once let ; ithe word go forth that the people of Oregon have delib- if eratel refused to sustain her . chief educational Institution and at once the tide of Imml- gration beginning to move to- ward us will surely be divert- ed elsewhere. ! STEPHEN A. LOWELL, -4 Pendleton, Oregon. 4 t t. ACil'.K'l'LTl'KAL PAPKK I l-'OR STATE rXlVKRSlTY I The Oregon Agriculturist and Jiural Northwest, the isadlng farm griper of Lie state, Is pronounced In 13 support of the State University appropriation. "In the latest issue its fading editorial says: "We hope the farmers of Oregon till s:and by the appropriation for !the State University, because we have lotiserved that the states which have ',na!e the greatest progress and have jthe best schools of every kind are Otiose which provide liberally for the ihole system from the foundation 'Jin. The San Francisco Bulletin is au thority for the statement that, after the Panama canal Is completed, the naval base of the I'nlted States will be In the Pacific instead of th? At lantic ocean. According to the Bulle tin the rendezvous paint will be M tg dalena bay. which is most centrally located. There will then be sixteen battl ships in the Pacific squadron, and sixteen in the Atlantic. It is more than likely, however, that the Bulle tin article is simply a dream of some reporter. Magdalena bay does not belong to the United States and thus far It has not been possible to se cure the right from the Mexican gov ernment to establish even a coaling station there. The paper trust Is a good trust to some people. In his testimony be fore the congressional committee John H. Korris, of the American Newspaper Association, testified that Hearst, the publisher, has been get ting paper from the trust at prices ra'v;!ng from $1.02 to $1.05 per hun dred pounds, which Is much below the rates charged newspaper publish ers' In general. This statement sheds some light on the painful silence the Hearst newspapers have maintained when the paper trust has bee-i ftp for discussion, in the opinion of an ex change. " ' Almost every rewspnper In the state Is supporting the University np proprlation, a fact that shows tin press may be relied upon to do the right thing at the rlg'it time.' Fur thermore, the papers are doing this work, filling many columns with Found argument on the subject, with out comp-nsatlon or hope of reward except that which comes from the en hanced welfare of the slate in which all will share alike. May 23 would be a fitting day for congress to skiddoo, though Its sig nificance may cause the leaders to choose a later day for adjauVument.
