to THE EUGENE DAILY GUARD,' WEDNESDAY. MAY 13, H Vr . .; as-''''.If RHEUMATISM BLOOD FILLED WITH URIC ACID f Rheumatism conies from au excess of uric acid in the blood. This acid circulating through tlie system acts as an irritant to the different muacles, nerves, bones and tissues of the body, and produces the, inflammation and Bwellicpr of the joints and the sharp, cutting pains characteristic of the dis ease. When the blood is overburdened with uiic acid it continually grows weaker and more acrid, and poorer in nourishing qualities. Then Rheuma tism becomes chronic, and not only a painful, but a formidable and danger ous disease. Sometimes the heart is attacked, the general health is affected, and the oils and fluids which lubricate the muscles and joints are destroyed by the acrid matter which the blood is constantly depositing in them ; the muscles shrink and lose their elasticity, the coating of the joints becomes hard and lliiek, and often the sufferer is left a hopeless cripple. t S. Kelly, dramatic critic of the Evening Tele gram, has to say of "Mrs. Temple's Telegram": "There are few funnier fortes than "Mrs. Temple's Telegram," which came to the Ilelllg last night for a sin gle performance. The same cuii ment that appeared in this column when the farce was presented several munths ago still holds goud it was a mistake to give such a brief en gagement. One night Is no engage ment for a farce like 'Mrs. Tem ple's Telegram.' If the company wanted to do the public a service, and at the same time fill Its own coffers, the comedy should play several nights In the city Instead of one. This be cause It's a raining good show, and one which sends an audience out boosting. "Aside from the amusingness of the entertalnninet, the chief interest lust evening centred in William Ber nard, who has the principal fun-making part. Bernard Is one of the best known players In these diggings. For years he was associated with the Ba kcronfnns, and when he appeared in Mrs. Temple's Telegram last night ho waB extended a regular W'ebfoot welcome, and could have made a speed! If ho hadn't been sn bashful. There wera other familiar people In the cast, such as Joseph Dalley, who again played the butler, the same character he filled during the previ ous ongagem?nt. N'orval MacGregor, who was at the Marquani In stock last summer, Is nlso in the company, and Margaret Snow, who had the name part In 'The College Widow,' touring the coast last winter, ap peared as Mrs. Temple, who sent the telegram." This beautiful little farce comedy holds the hoards at the Eugene thea tre Thursduy evening, May 14. Seats will he plnced on sale at the box of flee Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. Prices, 25c, 50c, 75c and $1.00. BAD FIRE AT GRASS VALLEY', OR. GrasB Valley, Or., May 12. At midnight last night fire broke out in the general drygoods store of E. E. Porter & Company. Before the fire department and citizens arrived the fire was beyond control. One com plete business block on the west side of the street, except W. F. Wclgand & Company's store, was burned. The heat broke nearly all the glass out of the stores across the street. Losses were as follows: E. E. Porter & Company's dry goods store. lops 117.000. Insurance SlO.OOft: A. J. James L. Gallagher, chairman of the finance committee and leading member of the Schmltz Honrd of Supervisors, had another trying day on the stand In the trial of Abe Ruef, for whom he confessed to hnvlng acted as ag ent in the various bribery transac tions. It wns Gallagher's third day on the stand and he was under cross-oxainlnnllon, re-dlrect and re-cross-examlnallon during the day, counsel for the defense finally get ting through with him at 5 o'clock. Gallagher, while at times confused and tangled up by the rapid fire of questions of Henry Ach, chief coun sel for Ruef, and vague and Indefin ite as to time and places of conver sations, doggedly stuck to his story that Ruef Instructed him to Inform the other Supervisors that each mem .tier of ilu board would receive $750 to pass- the Parkside trolley fran chise.
