Joe Come In The Book- keeper. f- 4 JUDGE CAKE POSSESSES SENATORIAL QUALIFICATIONS Id his address last night Judge Caka came out strongly and without reservation nl favor of the Universi ty of Oregon appraprlalion. Whether tali la a politic position for a cun- Udate before the icoplo to take makes no difference, but t-he numb unhesitating declaration stamps him ai a man of positive beliefs, and not timid about expressing them on oc caalon. This Is a splendid trait for a Halted States senator to possess. It Is sot likely that Judge Cake's election would have any bearing upon the University appropriation, or that It Is aa Issue In the campaign, but lib straightforward declaration of sym pithy for educational work, mid hl- eadorsement of the plan for build tag np 6f a great popular university in the state, open to every ambitious young man and woman who Is willing to work and study, will make many friends for him, not only In I.an county, but throughout the entire state. Wa want a broad-gauged man to represent Oregon in the .upper house of congress, not a demagosue paijd tag to illiterate prejudices, and prone te play politics when the crying net ot the hour Is statesmanship. Mea ored by this standard Judge Cake h: vary much the advantage of his riva tor popular endorsement. WATER POWER IS KING At various stages of the Industri development of the United Stat' there hare been certain natural re sources Invested with a kind of sov ereignty In the public mind. Cotton Iron, coal and wheat have been pro claimed king in the Jubilation ove: aational wealth, and while these may continue to hold popular regard a bew monarch is about to arise in th Industrial world. It Is water pow Poa which our great-grandfather veiled largely for mechanical energy bat neglected later In the rush to dig mel from the earth for steam produc Hon. Interest has been revised In by draullcs by the movement started b President Roosevelt to develop tht "ofnty's waterways, and some amaz ut figures are being presented tt rounse public Interest. For Instance according to a writer In the Ixis An relet Ei press, the United States ge ological survey reports that 1.4ou.- o Indicated horsepower has be. n developed available for economic u- the Southern Appalachian stream. 4 with the construction of stnrag "aerroirs this figure might be raii-cd ",000,000. The present develop at figured at an annual return of Per horsepower, would yield at; 'Mta of about tSS.onn.oon, co.ua! three per cent on a capital f at' 10 . 000,000. Tbeee figures arouse enthnslaoi. exaltation which has biv.-ii nek a astounding financial as evidently becoming nation-wide, tth IU centre near the White House. as Indira: du-ss, ;i:i delivered nors anj V.';ihi!;, J by the presidents ad-! :..l in t.nlav's Guard, and' i:.,. cmf .O n,e of go Q-1 .'.io r notables gathered " t!:is lime. Mrs. Hetty Green, so the dispatch say. is threatened with death b no Hiaiick Hand unless she gives up ..0oo. And you can bet the old ly won; 1 give up her life gladly to save so much coin. In knocking out the proposed re- jtnr.it inn of the "canteen" In soldiers homes by the decisive vote of 1ST in1. .... It., the members of the house made a noise like k. eplng tab on the strength nf the prohibition wave. Senator Teller is too good a man to btv-oni,. a permanent victim of the liclaior nightmare habit. This coun try isn't France by a jugfull. Mean while .Mr. Teller might find relief bv hanging his diet. i Several gentlemen ambitious to fill second place on the national ticket feel mighty kindly toward the Ohio Ootuocrats for having nominated Jud ;on Harmon for governor. If congress authorizes the issue oi emergency currency on commercial paper, the government will only bt doing what t tie banks do every day. The 300 inhabitants of Benbow ity. which is credited with having J 3 saloons, are all doubtless mem bers of the ancient Dendelbow tribe. If every member who failed to eari that increased salary were to bo Iropped, the next congress would itat the record for new faces. I MEMOIR AM The following verses are written In memory of Daniel Smith, who died May t, 190S: Dear Uncle we miss you from out presence, When your face we no more see; While of others we are thinking Wo oft times think of thee. Your feeble walk is ended. And your work on earth Is done; But we hope some day to meet you In a fairer, brighter home. iVbere sorrow and death cannot on tor. Anil night and all is one , Where life gees on forever, That is a far better home. For nlnetv years you've been with us. Toiling and sorrowing through Hie. Chairman. o , riN' SHOULD BE KEPT IN CONDITION Ever since the cement walks and the curbing around the county park blocks, or the plara. have been built the space between the walks and the curbing has been neglected, and the tall grass growing wild and gravel and rubbish allowed to remain there present a bad appearance com pared to the neatness which characterizes the appearance ot the park block and surroundings. In the opinion of most people It Is the duty of the county park tender to see that this work Is attended to, but the county officials say that It Is the duty of the city to look after the matter, while the city officials say the coun ty should pay for It. Whose duty it is to see to the matter should at. tend to It at once. It should be no great task to spread a few loads of good soil over the space between the walks aud the curbing and sow tt to lawn grass, and the expense would be very little. EUGENE MEN RODE COW DOWN MAIN STREET TOWN" OF llAltltlSlll lt(i STIRRED UP OVER LITTLE EPISODE THERE ONE DAY TIMS WEEK Two young men residing In Eu gene had occasion to go to Harris burg one day this week on business They evidently succeeded In finding a blind pig down there anyway, they filled up on bad booze and started for a lark. They spied a cow in a barn, and tying a rope around her neck took her out and rode her down the main street of the quiet little town to the cousternatlon of the In habitants. A number of farmers tried to remonstrate with them and It Is said that the young men from Eu gene, who are reputed to be handy with their "dukes, proceeded to wipe them off the earth and succeed ed in their task pretty well, It Is said. but soon ran up against the town marshal and a force of deputies, who subdued tho mand placed them In the lockup. They were later brought be fore tho village magistrate and fined for being drunk and disorderly. MRS. GORDON' REFCKKS TO MAKE STATEMENT Mnrshfleld, Or., May 11. Reliev ing that she could live but a few hours, Mrs. Hertha Etta Gordon, who was shot Sunday morning by Mazuke Anderson, this evening persisted In her denial that sho had anything to do with the counterfeiting of money on Coos nny.' At tho Mnrshfleld Gen eral hospital, where she Is being treated, Mrs. Gordon was seen by an Oregonlnn representative. "I am too near death to talk." she moaned. "If I live until tomorrow morning you can talk to me. 1 will not speak to newspaper men. 1 am so sick I can say nothing." When asked about about the coun terfeiting charges she choked nnd moaned out that tho charges were false. "They are taking advantage of me when I am sick," she cried. "Why do they say such things about me? I don't know anything about any counterfeiting, and they have no right to sny those 'things about me They lied about me In Portland and the papers there said a lot of things that were not true." , WELIz-DRILLEliS OF El'GENE KSTAIILISH PRICES Eugene, Or..
