The DeLancy-Varney company, known as the Independent line, baa applied to the city council for a char ter to operate their system at this place. The application was laid over for investlsatlon. Opposition is sup posed to be the life of trade, but there ars exceptions in all cases and this Is one of them. Two systems will prove burdensome, especially to business houses as they would nat urally be forced to patronize both systems. This company offers no other inducements for a franchise than that Riven by the Pacific States. This new company has headquarters at Corvallla and Benton county is equipped with this service and we are informed that the Bervlce is su perior to that given by the Pacific States. The Commercial club has submitted a proposition to the Pa cific States Co. asking certain con cessions and with these, If granted, a chance to get a foothold. We are supplied with a lot of old hand-me-down phones that should be replaced with modern central force phones, that Is, when the receiver is taken down, central is called.
