" 1 can not answer on t tie Kround that It would tend to iniTiminate nie, I at riik Calhoun, presidenl of the Unit ed Hailroads, Is battling today to pre vent being piared on the stand in the trial of his subordinate. Tiry h. Ford, on a charise of bribery. The prosecution 'spruiiK U sensa tional card when, after an Ineffectual effort to find Thornwell Mullally. Calhoun's assistant, it placed Cal houn on the witness stand. As Calhoun took his seat the de fense objected to the witness being questioned. This was conibatted by the Btate and Calhoun was compelled to remain on tile stand. ,He refused to answer ;the first direct question put to him and then requested per mission to make an explanation for declining to answer. The attorneys then engaged in a heated argument to decide whether Calhoun could re fuse to answer under some other plea than that it might tend to de grade him. Upon taking the stand Calhoun gave his residence as New York, San th Carolina. Georgia and Cleveland, Ohio. After giving 1 his true name he was asked: "When did you come to Ran Fran cisco after April 18, 1906?" The defense objected and Calhoun refused to answer, following his de clination with a request to be permit ted to explain. Special Prosecutor Heney, who had entered the court room shortly after Calhoun took the stand, whispered to Assistant District Attorney O'Gara that there should he but one reason the witness would decline to answer, and after O'Gara had objected to the request. Attorney A. A. Moore, for the defense, Jumped into the fray, declaring that Calhoun was called to the stand practically to be a witness against himself, and that the defense had a right to argue as to whether or not he should be called as a witness. After a long argument Judge Law lor decided that he would drav his own Inference from the tendency of the questions put to Calhoun, and should the witness decline to answer and the court sustain his declination, the witness would not be permitted to give his reason for his refusal to an swer. This was acceded to by both sides. Calhoun then addressed the court, an unusual proceeding, al though he Is an attorney. He de clared that he fully stood on his con stitutional rights to refuse tn an swer If pressed by the prosecution, and admitted that should he be sus taineil by the court in his refusal he had no right to announce his reason. He offered, however, to make a state ment of his attendance as a witness, but this the court declined to hear. Late this afternoon Calhoun will again be placed on the stand and In terrogated. Calhoun Cues on Stand. The court then acceded to tho de fense' request that the mutter of call ing Calhoun be argued. Moore held that the calling of Calhoun was vir tually calling a co-defendant to tes tify against himself. He declared that the real purpose of placing Ford on trial for the third time was to compel Calhoun to give evidence against himself, and to give his de fense in advance of his case. He denounced the prosecution's action as the greatest outrage ever perpetrated before any court, and declared that Calhoun never feared the Issue and has always been anxious to go to trial. O'Gara conibatted the argument, afler which the court ordered that Calhoun must take the stand. Court adjourned until 3 o'clock. The following leitor from Mrs.; Dunuiway, the "mother of the woman suffrage movement in Oregon," Is; self-explanatory: PorilHiid. Or,, April 23. 1 908.1 President Campbell, of Oregon State-; University, Kugene. Oregon. "lh-ar Sir and Friend: The un dersigned, as one of the large major ity of mothers of Oregon, desires to express a hope that the appropriation voted to our State University at the last session of the legislative assem bly may be confirmed by the electo rate at large. "Of one thing the mothers of Ore gon are certain, and that is that if! they could vote, no son or daughter of theirs would be compelled to go away from home to complete a higher education. "Will you not bring this fact to the attention of the prominent men and women of our beloved University town and ask them while voting! such of them as can) for the appropriation they seek to remember also to vote for the equal right of mothers to vote upon every vital question at every election to be held hereafter? "Respectfully yours for education and liberty, "ABIGAIL SCOTT DUNXIWAY." JAPAN SENDS SHIPS TO .COERCE CHINA Pekin, April 29. Claiming that Its presence has no significance and that the visit is purely friendly, an other Japanese cruiser squadron has arrived in Chinese waters. The Chi nese do not accept protestations of friendship and say that the real pur pose of the visit is to frighten China into Abandoning the anti-Japanese boycott, which continues to spread. The people are furious and are mak ing threats of all sorts. The squadron, consisting of four cruisers, has dropped anchor at Chlng Wank Tao, near Taku. . The viceroy at Canton advised the Japanese admiral to bring his ships to canton, fearing that their presence would cause trouble, but the squad ron will visit Canton anyhow. Admirals Ijun and Tongakl have arrived here with their staffs and will be received by the dowager em press on Friday.
