Tlll'HSllAY, APRIL 23. 11XX HK1K) WORSHIP AND ITS ItESlLTS The people of this country are giv en to hero worship, and they are not discouraged by the fact that a close examination of their heroes usually reveals a lot of scarecrows, says a valued exchange. When one ideal man turns out to be a cheap grade of graven image, they immediately dig up another, and exalt him, and burn incense before him, and give him a halo, and denounce all who do not bow down before him. It Is not surprising that the man thus exalted usually proves a disap pointment sooner or later generally sooner, for his worshippers place his reputation so high, and attribute to Mm such superhuman qualities that he would need to be something more than mortal to live up to the plans and specifications. He may try, sin cerely and strenuously, to deserve his halo, but the Impossibility of the task is bound to discourage him, and when he lets go one hold he lets go all holds, and comes down kerflop, ulth the customary dull, sickening Ihud. . A few years ago Attorney Jerome was being exploited as the American St. George who was destined to slay the dragon of municipal corruption and make New York, a holy city. He was written and Illustrated in the magazines until his name became a weariness to those who had been cured or hero worship; ho was a compendium of all the virtues; a Bayard of courage, a Napoleon of strategy, a Caesar of determination, Demosthenes of eloquence; he was the knight without feaand without reproach; and at the end he stands before the disgusted hero worshppers as a sorry Don Quixote. There was too much adulation for man of ordinary force. And all the time that he was being lionized J ana adored It was known that he was cigarette fiend, which fact alone was sufficient evidence thnt he would lever make good. Whether the charges of dishonesty will hold good against him or not there is no doubt that the charges of negligence and Incompetence will he sustained. It Is another case of putting a hun dred dollar saddle on a twenty dollar Dors ?, He Is a pitiable failure, hut he is lot alone to blame; the Idolaters o furnished him with an impossi ble reputation and then expected him In lire up to It have their rasponsl blltly. STOCK GAMBLING. AXD LEGITIMATE III. Koseburg will pay 4 1-2 per cent of the contract price of its $7.,tiuii worth of paving to an engineer for drawing the plans and making spec ifications. A competent city engineer on a moderate salary would do this work and any other of similar char acter for a very small part of that cost. And now the Wall street rumor broker has it that Harriman is reach ing out for the scalp of the "mi crowned king." Morgan is bald and hard to scalp. However, If anybody knows how to "sic" 'cm on each oth er, we do not believe in spoiling the sport. It is hardly likely that the national conference to consider ways and means to conserve our national re sources, called by the president to meet In Washington next month, will have Its attention culled to battle ships. 1 j Nick Longworth, in his "maiden" speech, said he would vote for four battleships because It was his duty. Well, we should Biilcker. What sort of a story cottkl he have carried home had he done otherwise. The Pennsylvanlan who had a lot of stolen jewelry returned to him with a letter saying "can't sell this junk," is doubtless In doubt as to whether to he glad or to suspect that his jewelry is "phony." A lecturer on the Philippines says "yon can't make a Filipino liko a Kansas City man," which Is Just about as startling as saying you can't make Hooker Washington look like Andy Carnegie. Doubtless the fact that old mem bers of the house thought Hobson entirely too "fresh" for a new mem ber also had something to do with the upsetting of the Koosevelt nr.val program. Marshfield Is not only going to have a fine $7.i.ono hotel, but also another costing $:.o.non. upon which the preliminary work has already been cotnnit lie eil. We violate no confidence In stat ing that Judge Alton II. Parker, who heads the New York delegation to Denver, will not s cond the nomina tion of l!ryan. According t.) the latest bulletin from the presidential rumor factory Hearst Is grooming Senator l.aKol lette for the Independence League nomination. And the American Hankers' Asso ciation wants to know why the sen ate dared to pass a currency bill it had condemned. So do many others. Paradoxical as it may appear, the unlnstructed delegates to the nation al conventions are getting the most Instruction from the, politlrla ns. Salem is still talking about paved street. Fulton has written a letter to 11. M. Cake, who defeated Fulton for the senatorial nomination last week, ln which the senator extends his con gratulations to his successful oppo nent and assures him ot such support as the senator can give. In conclu sion Senator Fulton says he believes Cake will be elected. Senator Ful ton's letter, which was written on the eve of his departure for Washington to resume bis duties, is as follows: Portland.Or., April 20. My dear Mr. Cake: I am leaving for the East in the morning, and before going wish to extend to you my congratula tions on your nomination and my as surances of all the support 1 can give yon. Trusting and believing that you will be elected 1 am, sincerely yours, "Signed) "C. W. FULTON." Immediately upon his return to Washington Senator Fulton will take up the matters that have been pend ing during ills absence from the sen ate. He will first devote himself to insisting on action on the rnilroad land grunt resolution, which has been held up, and the senator expects to have this reported out of the commit tee, where It is now peacefully re posing.
