Still, if his daughter has set her heart on a prince for her "hubby," he'll have to stand for it, as others have had to do. It would be going beyond any knowledge we have to say that some members of the house are move anx ious to discredit Congressman Lllley than to show up any submarine lob bying that may have been done. So we can only hope that things are not Just whatl they appear to be, judged from this distance. Though most people believe there is and has been for years a well-paid submarine lobby in Washington, the house investigation committee has been unable to find any lobbyists, al though a number of witnesses have acknowledged being employed as "counsel" by the boat company. Senator Raynor, of Maryland, de clined second place on the Bryan tick et when it was tendered to him by Senator Beveridge; but that's no rea son that he would do the same with a tender from the Denver convention. Perhaps guilty consciences are re sponsible for the editorial space de voted to prove that "Thou shalt not steal" does not apply to kisses. Any way, It Is not a subject for a married editor to be monkeying with. . Still, to get right down to the heart of things, If something's got tj br slack this yar, most people wrju!d a ht!! siglit rather it be the political campaign than business. If Senator-elect Bradley Is ns bos sy whoti he takes his seat In the son- ate as he. is at home, Republican sen ators may be sorry that Kentucky did not elect a Democratic senator. No wonder Hetty Green won't let the reporters into, her house. She thinks they have taken her at her word and only want to get In to marry her daughter. However, the citizens of San Fran cisco 'have not begun to chip In for the purpose of erecting a monument to Schmltz und Ruef. ' This Maine man who has fitted up a cozy reading room In the family tomb, in which to spend his leisure time, is doubtless only trying to get acclimated. . ARBOR DAY COMES ' APRIL 13 IN OREGON Arbor day occurs In Oregou this year on April 13, and it will prob ably be observed this year more generally than ever before, notwith standing the pupils and teachers of many schools have anticipated the occasion to a large extent by plant ing roses In the winter. Superin tendent of Public Instruction J. H. Ackerman has suitable material for Arbor day exercises and will spnd copies of the pamphlet out to the various counties early next week. Public interest in civic improvement and especially the rose-planting cam paign in Portland, have aroused new Interest in Arbor day. In order to encourage teachers and pupils In Improving school grounds, Superintendent Ackerman has ar ranged to secure photographs of some of the best kept grounds in each county and to keep these pic tures on display in his office, to gether with the names of the teach ers and the schools that have been Instrumental In promoting the good work.
