Steve Elklns, senator and multi
millionaire, has been known Jo dis
play an ugly grouch upon a lesser
provocation than having to divide his
coin with an impoverished scion of
Italian royalty. Still, if his daughter
has set her heart on a prince for her
"hubby," he'll have to stand for it,
as others have had to do.
It would be going beyond any
knowledge we have to say that some
members of the house are move anx
ious to discredit Congressman Lllley
than to show up any submarine lob
bying that may have been done. So
we can only hope that things are not
Just whatl they appear to be, judged
from this distance.
Though most people believe there
is and has been for years a well-paid
submarine lobby in Washington, the
house investigation committee has
been unable to find any lobbyists, al
though a number of witnesses have
acknowledged being employed as
"counsel" by the boat company.
Senator Raynor, of Maryland, de
clined second place on the Bryan tick
et when it was tendered to him by
Senator Beveridge; but that's no rea
son that he would do the same with a
tender from the Denver convention.

The Commercial Club committee
on the proposed building and loan as
sociation met last nlcht and discus
sed plans for organizing the asso

next week among the citizens of the
city to solicit stock subscriptions In
the organization.
The committee on better lighting
for Willamette street also met and
discussed the matter of strings of In
candescent lights along the
street. The committee has been In
conference with the Willamette Val
ley Company In regard to rates for
lights, and It is expected that ar
rangements will soon be made for
better lighting. The committee is al
so conferring with the company In
regard to ornamental lamp posts for
the street.
Perhaps guilty consciences are re
sponsible for the editorial space de
voted to prove that "Thou shalt not
steal" does not apply to kisses. Any
way, It Is not a subject for a married
editor to be monkeying with. .
Still, to get right down to the
heart of things, If something's got

ARBOR DAY COMES '
APRIL 13 IN OREGON
Arbor day occurs In Oregou this
year on April 13, and it will prob
ably be observed this year more
generally than ever before, notwith
standing the pupils and teachers of
many schools have anticipated the
occasion to a large extent by plant
ing roses In the winter. Superin
tendent of Public Instruction J. H.
Ackerman has suitable material for
Arbor day exercises and will spnd
copies of the pamphlet out to the
various counties early next week.
Public interest in civic improvement
and especially the rose-planting cam
paign in Portland, have aroused new
Interest in Arbor day.
In order to encourage teachers and
pupils In Improving school grounds,
Superintendent Ackerman has ar
ranged to secure photographs of
some of the best kept grounds in
each county and to keep these pic
tures on display in his office, to
gether with the names of the teach
ers and the schools that have been
Instrumental In promoting the good
work.
