This seems to be a deliberate slur on the Texas liar. After the extraordinary legal de cisions in favor of Schmltz and Kuef. it is natural, rather than surprising, to learn that police graft Is still on the Job in San Francisco, Anything that's a world-beater gets the Gothamltes going. Just now they are hugging themselves over the completion of the longest cantilever b' Idge. Maybe certain "Interests" are not engaged in trying to throw a scare Into the wage-earners of the country. even If a lot of things do look some what suspicious. THK t'AXIHIIATK My hair fs gray, but not with years. My locks grew gray through many a day Of dubious thoughts and fears. My shoulders bowed, but not bv weight Of toil; I have a slinking gait, like the small boy who softly goes To wash the Jam mark from his nose; I am a candidate. " Of every man I seek to know, "Is he a friend or mortal foe?" I yearn to learn from every one, "Now are you 'pro' or are you 'con'? I eye each man T meet askance And mentally compute my chance. Searching my memory's archives dim To find If e'er I Injured him. There's Smith, a man I well could use, Egad, it gives my heart the blues; I often wake In icy sweat It seems I never can forget How one day In the past afar I gave poor Smith a bum cigar; I wonder if a chance there be That he still holds a grudge at me? There's Johnson well, I chanced to 'nrer. ' ' f i'--n tb "treet; I r-ve lt ht;l a pat o" two It. darn near gnawed my trousers through ; And worst, I do not know, to boot. If Johnson saw me pt the brute. If not my friendly bit of play Was so much labor thrown away. Oh, thoughts that prey upon my mind. How bitterly the past can blind! When I impounded Simpson's shoats, I lost at Teast a dozen votes; And, spanking Jackson's litle lad. 1 spoiled my chances with his dad. For each one of these little knocks They'll fix me at the ballot box. Each smiling youngster that I meet, Paternally I stop and greet, And, gazing at his vacant phiz, 1 tell the kid how bright he is; But when he's gone a horrid doubt Stirs In my brain and struggles out (Alas, too late) reminding that 1 should have kissed that little brat. How hard the row I have In hoe, As through the long campaign 1 go! Like captured thief, I slink and squirm. As humplo as the writhing worm, And do my level best to see I get no voter sore at nte. Forsooth, It has no feither weight The burden of a candidate. Exchange.
