The de fense will contend that the letters ot Hall and Mays show they asked Put nam to keep them Informed and to take the mutter up with tho special ugents of tho land office. In his opening address in the Hall Mays conspiracy trial yesterday Fran cis J. lleney charged that: Hall wanted re-appointment as Untied States district attorney and sought election ot Senators Mitchell and Fulton to that end. Ho forced ' Slato Senator W. W. Stelwer to vote for Fulton in Febru ary, 1H0G, by threatening Stelwer and others with criminal prosecution (Hall then being United States dis trict attorney) for Illegally fencing of public lands. Fulton was. a parly to this deal with Stelwer and used his Influence In Stclwer's behttlf to cause Hall to Institute civil proceedings against Stelwer instead of criminal.
