CHAP," A PIHK COMKDV WILL UK OPENING PIAY, WITH t'VItlli HCOTT AS ST AH. The Eugene theatre will open for mally .September 2, with the biic ceBHful New York comedy, "The Prince Chap," with Cyril Scott as the star of the cast. The theatre Is worth going to Bee of Itself, for it will be a new one to the patrons of Eugene. During the summer it has been entirely renovated, with paint, frescoes, and everything that makes a theatre a theatre. During laat winter the theatre sea son was a success, and the directors felt, at Its end, that the patrons should be treated In the best possible manner. As a result, several weeks ' were used by expert workmen adding touches that would make the theatre better, and In completely renovating Its Interior. The comedy, "The Prince Chap," Is one that will make the public laugh as they did not laugh lust winter. It is entirely different from the musical comedy, of which the country had so much last year. With It is all the highest humor, fit for the house that has been renovated from stage to gallery. "The Prince Chap" Is one of the greatest coniqdy successes seen In New York In many seasons, bo re port runs, with Cyril Scott In his original Htar role. The play was written by Edward Peple, and pro duced at the Madison Square theatre In the metropolis. Its success was bo great that tho day after Its first performance tickets were placed on Bale for the balance of the engage ment. Owing to other bookings nt the Madison Square, the comedy moved up to Weber's theatre, on Broadway, where Its run wns success fully continued for 200 nights. It was afterwards presented at the Yorkvllle, Lincoln Square and Ma jestic theatres, all within eighteen months. Besides this, "The Prince Chap" was played 150 times at Sir Charles Wyndham's Criterion thea tre, London, and Is now running In the English provinces. Cyril Scott made an admirable start as a stor In "The Prince "Chap." The New York critics ques tion If there Is another artist In the country so admirably adapted for the role. Apparently excellent Judg ment has boen shown In the choice of both star and play. "The Prince Chap" Is reported to be quite unique, something that appeals to every class of playgoer. WELCH FRANCHISE IN CAPITOL CITY ' There Is great Interest In the lat est move to secure an electric line franchise through the city, and the statement of the chairman of the committee, Alderman Oesner, that It as not a local Blreet car line lends color to tho theory that the Great ' Northern wants to get Into the Cap I Ital City on a large scale. The HneB ' of the proposed rond are drawn with I a free hand, and gridiron the capital of Oregon, bIbo taking in over a mile I of Front street now occupied by the i Southern Pacific tracks. The Indl l cntiuns are that n crossing point over ' the Willamette nt this point is sought at several places. ! Alderman Gesner reported the Welch franchise ordinance last night with enough amendments and changes so that the members of the council wanted further time to con sider the proposed rhanges, ns they were more numerous than the orig inal document, and the aldermen wanted to see the franchise with the amendments anil changes In their proper place In tho ordinance. Stolz, Greenbaum, llayno and others nsKeu that It go over and an opportunity he given for examination. A map Bhonld accompany the report, show ing .lust what streets are asked for, and thlB will probably be done at the next meeting of the council. The franchise covers bo many atreots.cbv ers all the lines In the city, and runs through the Spnuldlng Lumber Com pany's plant, that the utmost care is required on the part of the city ronn cll to know what they are granting. Bell, Room 10, Beckwlth Bldg. a24 When a elrciiB performer, riding on a unlcycle with the handlebars re moved, turns somersaultB and lands again astride of the one wheel, It la time for the spectators to sit up and take notice. This is what Wally Kaufmann does in the big bicycle act featured this season with Ringling Brothers' circus. There are ten in the Kaufmann family, and they per form difficult feats on slender ma chines that are all the more amaz ing. One of them rides a triple tan dem machine, perched on the front pedals and the front wheel In the air. Another sensational act Is the fly ing trapeze spectacle offered by the celebrated Jordan family. There are ton men, women and children In the act, and a rigging which fills nearly the entire dome of the canvas is used. There are thirty other aeriallsts be sides the Jordans, and prominent are the European Clarkonians, the Alvarez family from Spain, the Mil ieus, the Shaws, the aerial Smiths, Joseph La Rap. a mld-alr contortion ist, and the celebrated De Mario, trapeze acrobat. Chief among the forty riders are the five Bedinls, renowned all over the world; Mr. and Mrs. Stickney, the Hobsons, Paul Devene, Bud Gorman, John Mercer and John Agee, the champion rough rider'of the world; Daisy Hodglnl; just from Italy; the Clark brothers, of the Londono Hip podrome; and Nola Satterfleld. As regards trained animal features the Ringling Brothers lead all the orld. One act alone, the Riccobono horses, has distinction over all other educated animal specialties on earth. These wonderful eq nines wear boots, trousers, hats and coats: they dine at a table from plates; they take their own clothing off, even to the boots, and do more difficult things that must be seen to be b'elieved.
