FH1DAV JUNK 21 NKW ZKALAND IDKA8 We read in the magazines a great . many articles on New Zealand. It Is a new country, but it sueniH able to furnish many new Ideas of govern ment. Soino of theso, ns detailed by a prominent official of that country, not long ago, might be profitably im itated In this country. New Zealand, It sooins, Is govern ed on the Idea which Is gradually as suming controlling strength here, that ' the people really rule. There they do It In fact; hore they have only done It In namo. We da It out of the mouths of our rulers, who too often have fallen Into the habit of regard lng themselves and their own Inter ests as tho peopled and of ruling ac ... cordlugly. Here tho corporation has risen tottho control of things from ivhlch it is now to be torn down New Zeuland seems to huvo taken It by tho ear In time, and to have secured tho development of Industries without undue cost to t no people, oy the simple exepmllent of stopping In with government operation or monop' Oltes mid government hnnd on con spiracies seeking to suppress compe tition in biiHlncH8. The gnvornniont opornlos tho rail roads and telegraphs and such things as neod to be monopolies for their successful and cheap development The government keeps the manufac turers In check by Us duties and tax es. It is seemtiiKly very paternal government, but porhnps not more so than Is necessary to sooure to the Individual citizen his liberty and equality, which we declare for them, but fail to secure to them. We will get there after a while, but New Zealand seems to huvo stolen a march on us. They havo street cur fares for a penny, which Is two routs; nd a seat for every passenger. When the seals are full no more ure taken board, an arrangement recommend ing It Belt to tho good sense of ev ery one suvo I ho transporter, no one of whom has ever seen Its propriety. They say the proposed pnssonger ' would howl If excluded: and so he might; hut tho way to puciry hl'm is to glvo him n seat In another car which Is also a remedy which the transporter In this country finds too costly. c 1 Another Smith Is out for national political honors, in the person of ' Senator W. A. Smith, of Michigan, now being boomed for the vice pres idency. The family Is rapidly devel ' oping a tendency to demand Its own. A negro editor, after calling the temporary commissioner of Internal revenue a "two-fared political pi rate," naively adds: "Wo don't buso." Recent news from Japan and the - continued silence of Captain Rich mond P. Ilohson seems to muko it In order to ask: Who did tho min gling? If any man has stopped trying to ccumulato money for fear of Its be ing taken away from him by the government, tho public hasn't found It out. Aftor all It Isn't murh consolation to think that tho weather of 1907 may be an Interesting subject of con versation with the grandfathers of 157. Woman's spellbinding Is both at Its best and Its worst when exercised upon an audience of one. As a rule It Is at Its best before and at Its worst afterward. ..11 a 0 ( , V. 1 .. , 1 Tiiiv ! viiiwiuttXtu ill wuiri 1U the possibility of a pure money law. HOW TO KMX TOril TOWN Kick. Patronize outside newspapers to the exclusion of your own, and then denounce them for not being as large as the city papers. C'OUINKHH. What words of sweetness meaning, What wistful, pleading gaze, Can draw the alien spirit To love, and love's embrace? For hearts will not be bidden . And love no-spell doth know To rouse the fire that's hidden Beneath a robe of snow. The planets In their courses Might easier bend to earth, There are no words, no force, To call lave into birth. Oh cease your mute appealing,. And looks that soft entreat. No power can waken feeling v in hearts that coldly beat. Elizabeth French. DON'T DO AN V GOOD , TO CUT MAD AT 8. P. (Albany Democrat.) The people of Eugene are becom ing Impatient because the S. P. does not do certain things, says a local papor. Well, Just get mad and see what good It does. The madder you HH with the S. HALL FOR MUSIC RECITALS NEEDED IN EUGENE One of the things needed In Eu gene is a regular recital hall for music recitals and occasions of this kind along educational lines. This need was brought to our notice by the conditions as they existed at the music recital at Ellers Piano House one evening this week. The large room was crowded to the doors by those anxious to participate in the pleasure of the occasion and while seating space had been provided for a large audience yet the accommoda tions were insufficient for many stood up throughout the entire en tertainment. In front of the build ing the walk was all occupied by lis teners, who, while they could not see the performerB, listened attentively. Also the street In -front was lined with carriages loaded with people whose tastes were musical, and the splendid order and quiet that pre vailed showed plainly the apprecia tion of Eugene musical talent along these lines, and the Ellers Piano House Is to be congratulated on the recognition of the needs of our peo ple In this respect. The utility of a recital hall In connection with the branch here is beyond question, and the feature Is under consideration by the local representative.
