We read in the magazines a great
. many articles on New Zealand. It Is
a new country, but it sueniH able to
furnish many new Ideas of govern

New Zealand, It sooins, Is govern

We will get there after a while, but
New Zealand seems to huvo stolen a

HALL FOR MUSIC RECITALS
NEEDED IN EUGENE
One of the things needed In Eu
gene is a regular recital hall for
music recitals and occasions of this
kind along educational lines. This
need was brought to our notice by
the conditions as they existed at the
music recital at Ellers Piano House
one evening this week. The large
room was crowded to the doors by
those anxious to participate in the
pleasure of the occasion and while
seating space had been provided for
a large audience yet the accommoda
tions were insufficient for many
stood up throughout the entire en
tertainment. In front of the build
ing the walk was all occupied by lis
teners, who, while they could not see
the performerB, listened attentively.
Also the street In -front was lined
with carriages loaded with people
whose tastes were musical, and the
splendid order and quiet that pre
vailed showed plainly the apprecia
tion of Eugene musical talent along
these lines, and the Ellers Piano
House Is to be congratulated on the
recognition of the needs of our peo
ple In this respect. The utility of a
recital hall In connection with the
branch here is beyond question, and
the feature Is under consideration
by the local representative.

. AT FRUIT CANNERY
i . r
The Allen fruit cannery is working
only half force now, on account of
inability to get enough cherries to
keep them going. At that 200 cases
of twenty-four cans each are put op
each day. Of the fifty persons now
employed about thirty-five are girls
and to watch the ripe fruit go
through the various processes would
convince any housewife that It is
easier to buy canned fruit -than spend
hot mornings in the kitchen.
Next week the full force will be
working. As soon as the cherry crop
is canned, peaches and other fruit
will be ready. After them come
pears, prunes and apples.
