' THURSDAY, JUNE 13 BOUTH EKN PAC1 FIC KNOCKS Tbe biggest enterprise that Eu gene1 had In prospect, that of the Sto-TBy-Bracher sawmill below town, has been knocked by the Southern Pacl flc. While it- has not yet been killed off It must be postponed for a yoar, after all preliminary arrangoniontB bad been made for Immediate con struction, because of the railroad company refusing to keep its agree ment in regard to a spur lino Into the company's 'timber. This newp will not come as a surprise to Un people of this section, since they have learned by bitter experience that the Harrlman Interests are for obvious reason Interested In holdng back the development of the Willamette vul ley and Ihrotttng every enterprise they have the power to destroy The most discouraging fenturo of the situation Is the ability of the rnll road company, through Its paid em Is. sirles and agents, to keep the people divided. Some they control by fa vors, others by throats, nnd more by false representation of the facts They fear development and growth because -the country in its preaonl condition may be controlled absolute- ly, but with growing population and wealth competition In transportatlor must Inevitably come; hence their anxiety 1 to destroy every entorprlsr of magnltudo that Is projected and to discourage capitalists from mnk log Investment hore. This Is the strongest reason thai can be -advnncod for the building ol road to tho coast, and If the pooplr of Lane county refuse to do every thing 'in their power to gain Indepen dence tben they deserve to beeom the permanent slaves of the South irn Paclflo railroad. The true friend of the Willamette valloy, however should not be unduly discouraged Our people are slow to act, but w predict that some time their Indlgna tlon will reach suoh a pitch Unit II will Arouse a storm ' that even sc strong a trust as that headed by Mr. Harrlman will quail bofore It. A unltod and earnest peoplo, working only for what Is right and Just, be comes a power that no tyranny, com mercial or othorwiso, is able to lung prevail against. THE OPPORTUNITY II Kit R. 1 There Is no doubt but the moBt Im portant proposition ever submitted tn the people, la that of the construction of a railroad to Sulalaw. tidewater. It Is more Important because that point In the development of the coun. try seems to have been reached whore Outside capitalists propose to tap the timbered sections In the western part Of the county with a railroad line, nd the alternative Is presented of (curing the Junction of such a road With the Southern Pacific at Eugene or elsewhere In the county. That it would be an irretrievable Iobs to this city to have the future business of that section diverted elsewhere hard ly admits of argument. The business organizations of Eu gene are now working on a very tan gible proposition that will Insuro the Immediate construction of such a road, and one that requires tho In vestment of but a small amount of cured they would accept the condi tions at once, and that no property owner would be so short-sighted, or exhibit such a lack of public spirit, as to refuBo to do bis part, when the matter is presented to him In a proper light. Opportunity knocks at the door of the city frequently but once, as Is said to be the case in the Individual career, and upon whether advantage Is taken of that one chance future success or failure depends, in this case the capitalists who have been patiently awaiting a definite answer for more than a month may become discouraged and turn to other local ities, if so, who knows that the op portunity will ever again bo so favor able, If It comes at all. And the conditions of the present proposition are so easy that it would seem that a dozen substantial citizens would be Justified In guaranteeing their fulfillment so that work might be proceeded with at once. The Oregon editorially calls at tention to the fact that there is no need for young men of tho West to spend a large amount of money In attending the large Eastern colleges, when every advantage Is now afford ed by the Institutions of this coast. That paper says editorially: "The Unlvorslty of Oregon Is honored In nnothor graduate this time from Its mining department Herbert G. Moultun, whose success In the voca tion of mining engineer bus been pro nounced, and whose promotion In that profession has boun rapid. He oes from the New Mexico Copper Company, at San Pedro, N. M., to the Cobalt Mining Company, of Cobalt, Ont., as chulf engineer, the position iarrylng a largo salary. The Instance Is cited In proof that It Is not noccs wry for a young Oregonlun of energy md capability to spend a large sum n taking a course In an Eastern col ego In order to become successful In t technical vocation. Mr. Monitor s but ono of miiiiy young men who inve passed from a course of study it the Stute University of the State grlciiltural College to a position of 'eaponBlblllty and emolument nnd iro already on the high road to prom nence in their chosen professions," Aftor all the talk about whnt the ederal government was doing mid iroparlng to do to the Standard Oil iiinch, a Toxas Jury got In tho first eal knockdown swat, by fining the Vators-Plorco Oil Company $1,623, 100 and ordering it to quit doing iiiBluoss In the state.
