" TUESDAY, MAY 21 REAL TAINTED MONEY "Tainted money" Is no Joke to the two Pittsburg bank clerks who are laid up with septic Infection of the thumbs from handling the "rags." Just how far our ragged and disrep utable paper money is responsible for the spread of disease even the doctors are unable to tell us, but that there Is some danger In it is undeniable These bank clerks each had a small, unnoticed abrasion on the thumb that ' became contaminated. According tc the Pittsburg Dispatch large bundles ,ot mutilated paper currency are daily shipped by the hanks of that city tr. Washington to be redeemed by the .treasury department, but the "rags" continue to pile up from depositors. In our domestic commerce bank notes and United States Treasury notes are the most convenient form of funds, but there should be some way of overcoming the objection of filth! ness so inexorably attached to paper bills, especially of small denomlna ' Hon. Even If nil the banks agreed . to Issue none but new notes, the evil i .would be overcome only to a certair extent, as tens of thousands of thes" fbllls pass from hand to hand and nev. er get to a bank at all. Therefore .' If is quite likely that, notwithstand ing the recognized danger and the re fpugnance with which we handle the -ragged and maladorous bills, we shall . continue to circulate and possess the tainted money, trusting our snfety to the charm of its unassailable power ''to overcome many of the prosaic 111? of life. . The growing town of Lewlston. Idaho, about the same size as Eugene. Is preparing contracts for street pav i log this year that will cost over r ? quarter of a million dollars. There will be no protests worth while In '; that enterprising community, and nc Injunctions against the improvement. Pendleton, Oregon, which did ItF first paving last year, after a pro tracted struggle with the mossback element, expects to pave twelve more blocks this year without opposition from any source. It has proved the beat Investment ever made by that city. Eugene will have a similar ex- . perlence If the Willamette Valley Company and Warren Construction Company ever rub their eyes open sufficiently to get to work In this city. Bernadlne Buckley, of Whitehall, N. Y., sixteen-year-old daughter of wealthy parents, varied the usual Program by eloping with and marry ing a street laborer Instead of one of the servants. She was afterward kidnaped by agents of the family and divorce may be expected In due course of time. Florida's legislature is a "house divided against Itself," the senate declaring the fourteenth and fifteenth mendments to the United States constitution to.be void, and the house f representatives that the amend ments are still there, though not doing much business In Dixie. Secretary Root says campaign ,'unds are one of the most useful ex penditures of money, from a public Point of view, because the bulk of it goes for political education of voters. No if he can prove that the "bulk" Kos for that purpose he can get his ''ews unanimously endorsed. Nothing i . o uuui uwui me taiK oi ribery n connection with the Wis consin senatorial election It always goes with the deadlocking of a leg mature. Better adopt the Oregon P'. even If It does result in putting Jonathan Bourne Into the senate frfMlonally. H rwZ " another knock at state's the United States supreme court holds that express companies may uenver L'. O. D. packages con taining liquor shipped from another state regardless of local prohibition laws, reversing the Kentucv court of appeals. The writer who uii,i ti,, ,i, shamrock grew n Chnia three or lour thousand years ago is donhttest trying to bring about more harnioni ous relations between the Chinese and Irish.bnt Tat is a hard man tr ue Damboozlcd. According to Ambassador liryce. the love of neither David and Jona than nor Damon and Pythias was a marker to that of John Dull for Uncle Sam. That man is onto his job all right, and earning the big salary he gets. Many may have forgotten the shooting up of Brownsville, hut the members of the senate military com mittee, which has resumed I lie In vestigation, have not been allowed to do so. Peary's difficulty in getting the coin to pay for another dash at the pole Indicates another increase of caution or of common sense nnione those who usually back such expedi tions. No man as widely advertised as a born fighter as Foraker has been could afford to lie down and he walk ed over by anybody. Much better a ;;ood licking. General Horatio C. King, who re eently declared Christian Science to be a humbug, lias deflected some of the firing that was coticentt ated on Mark Twain. Tho report that J. Pierpont Morgan is to change his religion must have been quite a jolt to those who did not know that he had any to change. Nobody should hold It. against the Spanish royal kid that he had nine :iamcs tacked to him he din't have any soy about It. A SOKROWITI, TAI.IC This is the sorrowful story Told when the twilight fails, And the monkeys walked together, Holding each other's tails. 'Our fathers lived In the forest; Foolish people were they; They went down to the cornland To teach the farmers to play. "Our fathers frisked In the millet, Our fathers skipped in the wheat, Our fathers hung on the branches Our fathers danced in tho street. "Then came the terrible farmers; Nothing of play they knew. Only they caught our fathers And set them to labor, too: "S"t them to work In the cornland. With plows and sickles an. I flails. Put them in mud-walled prisons. And cut off their beautiful tails.
