SATURDAY, APRIL 13 lilSKKPlTAIJLE JOV11XALISM The University faculty are out, traveling over the state, battling for their graft. The indelicacy ot Mr. Campbell's position Is in going about the state and lobbying with the people against their taking the referendum on the appropriation -which provides Tiim his salary. Salem Journal. These are fair samples of the "ar guments" made by the Salem paper In favor of the referendum move ment, started oy a few politicians of Linn county. They are reprinted as serving to show how contemptible a newspaper may become, when the man or Institution it attacks refuses to be held up. Hofer no doubt ex pected to be "Axed" after his first out break against the university, but the friends of the school having no cor ruption fund at their command and no inclination to raise and -expend money for that purpose, he feels that he has a real grlevwnre to air. In the estimation of the Journal It Is an un pardonable sin to refuse to pay tri bute when the hint is given that It is time to "shell out." A newspaper insults the intelli gence of "its readers when it brands as "grafters" men who are devoting their lives to the eause of education, working hard and earnestly for mod est salaries, simply leeuuse they come out publicly in defense of an lnslltntlon.the upbuilding of which is the areWtlon of their lives. Presi dent Campbell not only is within his rights in going before the jieople of Oregon and exilali. -g the needs of the university, tout It is his duty to do so. His high standing as an edu cator, and unblemished reputation as a man and citizen give weight to the conservative statements he has made and carry conviction to the mind of the lest element of every community. Even If the referendum movement was well-timed and based upon good grounds, the uncalled for per sonal abuse indulged in by Its only newspaper advocate, the Journal, would be sufficient to defeat it before the people. Oregonlans will not go on record as favoring a movement that Is promoted by men who refer to college presidents and professors as "grafters" and profess to believe that every worker in the field of higher education is Interested only to the extent of drawing his salary. TllfircillTS OX TilK THAW Till l The long drawn-out trial of Thaw ; has revealed one thing to the eter- nnl thame of New York. White had friends and friends by the score. This goes to show that he alone did n"t live the life run riot. It now ap pears that many were mixed up In this Sodomltlc fury. Here Is Illus trated the one bold paradox in na ture. There are those whose mighty genius makes them capable of eagle 'Hght; yet because the blood of beasts is In their veins, they wallow In the stench and muck of the far thermost bogs. The marvel is that one can live in both these extremes t one and the same tlme-ls head in the clouds and his hands in the dirt If al) the tales now told by un- uiu9iiiuK ononis flrls In ' the rhaw-IH White trajedy nro tru 1 lt i. tiiin. to i teach our rtl'ls (U!i 1 yet I the nie-.ii. i 1 hat 1: , : 1 :lK poem: -,.. ; parlor?" -i i spiil t 1. f'v t!..t: Hlf- atid j "It's th- .r.'Ui, st ever you parden theatres, .a j the habitats of th,. 1 luxurious, bnlliat.t. are not the 1 ;;i i mob fresh ir ; J'l'hey heleni; oft tiui 1":. .'til '! -!.rU'J rich iicl with lieaiit; '' an iaoratit m nadir world. tu those inflie jential enough tu forbid the court to j publish names. Some of these nearby days, a daring literary pioneer is going to write a book whose title shall be "The Jungle." It is not to be -another commercial gusher that tells the story of dumb brutes cm their fatal march to death. It will be a harrowing tale of gilded and mirrored rooms, where the Innocents are slaughtered; where Inhuman mothers, blinded by the glitter of gold and the glamour of genius, drive their daughters through the chutes into palaces whose deep shadows nev er lift. Stanford White checked the sobs of the beautiful and deluded Kvelyn Nesbit by whispering that the wrong lay not in Its commission but in its discovery. How far did be miss an apparently common Tact? It is a mighty dangerous doctrine, but the one most of us sometimes try to be lieve, and the more fortunate ol us find out our mistake before It Is too late to turn back. In the proportion that the rotten ness of present-day social life comes to the surface, in that same propor tion are we reminded that '"'man's greatest happiness can only be found in a peaceful and contented home, where virtue and morality Sit en throned, where no man can enter tin less he has the passport the sign and grip of a gentleman, and you will never have cause to be ashamed of the acquaintance of profligate fools who bring disgrace and mortifi cation." 'What -will his bible class do whne John I). Rockefeller, Jr., rests In seclusion, in obedience to his doc tor? Eugene Steam Dye Worka. tf BubMTitie Ur Q- DAILY a CAR I), KASTEKX OltKtiON Poll V. f o. c!.a Grande Daily Observer. 1 There Is not in the vcest a better conducted university than the t'niver sit y of Oregon. It Is one that every citizen of Oregon has go.nl reasons to be proud of. The results obtained by this university In mental training have been of the best, and really wonderful, considering tbe lack of proper equipments. The members of the last legislature visited the 11 i.. mi. 1 nn uppropi 1:1- j lion as ttley in ttielr judgment thought would do, was then passed. It is true that this amount was much smaller than Idaho and Washington allowed for their universities, still tbe amount allowed will place the Oregon university in fairly good shape. The question would now ' arise, why should any good citizen of Oregon attempt to cripple the uni versity by the referendum, tine of the reasons given by our l.lnn coun ty friends. Is that It was not stated in the bill passed, just how much should be used for building, unci how much for other purposes, but left it to the judgment of the regents. What do our friends from Linn de sire? Do they think that the legis lature should have hired architects to make estimates of the different buildings, so that they could pin the dishonest regents down to a cent. Dishonest regents they must be, If this excuse has any weight, as It of Itself Infers that they are not only dishonest, bat men without judg ment. It would look us though the saddling of this onto the grange was without the consent of the vast majority of the agriculturists of Ore gon. They are not built that way. There is no class of people who are more free-handed mill 'liberal, when the money used is for the education of the young, 'ft is the boast of thousands of them, "that they never voted against a school tax." It really looks as though tills move was started by disgruntled politicians, and that they have the erroneous Idea that they cuti use 'the grange ns a "cats imw." One thing tun Linn county friends can figure cm to a certainty, and that Is, Eastern Oregon will stand scifld 'for the university. Aolsy "People 111 'Kvldcnre. (Oregonlnn.) Tiie position of a few grangers In the Willamette Vnlley In regard to calling the referendum upon tho ap propriation for the Rtnte university Is not that of the state grunge, nor of any conslderuble number of the su bordinate granges.
