tome. Thomas Condon was a char
acter that had grown reverend in
hign service to his fellows. His lilt
was the manifestation of full living,
not for the dross which most men
pursue, but in search for the joy and
beauty of truth, that ho might im
part these to others.
Men of the Condon type confer sin
gular honor upon the community in
which their lives are spent. It is a
proud distinction for those who re
main to Bay that such and such an
one, of achievement in which there
is genuine worthiness, lived here.
There Is a tribute of respee in the

that becomes the subject of It.
Thomes Condon was amply deserving
of this tribute. The state of Orego-i
.is honored in .his worthiness and
will bear It in memory with pride and

fessor Thomas Condon of Eager.?. Of
course his demise was not unexpect
ed. He had reached the age of S4

of geology in the West, and ho has
left to Oregon a mine of valuable in
formation on this interesting subject-
He had gathered a large and
Magnificent collection of fossils,
hells, rocks and other deposits in
hich the history of centuries is writ
ten In legible characters for the sci
entific student. The work of Dr.
Condon Is not for yesterday, today or
tomorrow, but for the education of
ses yet to come, and will be most
h6bly appreciated as the future un-

road bills, which hae been replaced
by the Chapln bill, peanut politics,
and the railroad puppets In the house

defeat of the Chapln bill. The charge
was made thinly veiled tinder courte
ous guise on the floor of the house,
It "was made directly with profanity
by the disappointed members of the
Multnomah delegation after the af
ternoon session, when these men
thought they saw the railroad bill
dead, hatchetted on the cold door
step of the first Oregon legislature
ever elected directly by the people.
It may be that a railrad commis
sion bill will be passed by the legis
lature, and one that will work, but
the advocatos of the Chapln bill say
that if this Is accomplished it will
be because the senate takes a differ
ent course from the house, buries
petty bickerings, gets the best of the
railroad influence, and buries petty
politics something the house could
not do.
Since the Oregon legislature has
declared Its intention of assisting In
the upbuilding of a great modern
university here, it Is up to Eugene to
make a city that will be a fit loca
tion for such an institution. Paved
streets, cement walks, street car sys
tem and all the best civic improve
ments are in order now just as fast
they can be made. The appro
priation or $i2r,uoo a year tor the
university should mark a new era in
the progress of Eugene, and we be
lieve that our people will rise t o the
occasion and make the city the pride
of a splendid, growing state a verit
able show place for educational work
and modern progressiveness in muni
cipal affairs.

as well as subsidies, is shown by a
thrilling story of running Into a

big water spout by one boat, all in
single trip, without the slightest
damage. Now is the time to buy
tickets.
