EiiKiuu, Or.. A-.ii;. 21, UU'M. Editor Cinird: A few days sineo there a.ii'ined in the lii.ar.l a teller fl'iiin .Mr. Sehw.i.zM'hjbl, of Kiielie, askiuii a imbliu slalemeul from the Eiiueiio Waier C'oiii.any as t.i tlio Euk'oiio water Mijiply, and iulimatiiiK at tho seme time; that it was his opinion and the popular opinion of tho community, that it comes from the river. if such a misapprehension prevails, we are sincerely glad that Mr. Sclmarzsehild has vailed attention to it aud thus B'ven us au occasion aud opportunity to currrret it, and at the same time "yive full informa tion concerning this very Important matter. There is no subject which more vitally eoiicei lis a community than that of the water supply, for it involves public health, convenience, and lire protection. When the Eugene Water Company was llrst oracized, the water for the city supply was pumped direct from the Willamette just below the bridge across the river norlh of town. Thor cmb investigation had dcierm iued that tlio water 01 the Willamette was pure and whol some, aud being accessible and very abundant, was regarded at that timo tho best source possible, lu tho progress of the city, a sewer system was established, aud the sewerage of the city was dis charged into tho mill race, just above lis coullueuco with tho river, and only a fow hundred yards above the before Dieutioued water supply. Soon as the Eugene Water Company ascer tained that tho sewerage was to dis charge at this point, immediate steps were taken to Hud another source for the water to be supplied to tho city. Iu pursuance of this purpose a very large well was constructed at tho site of the present water station, a well which for the most of the season, has a capacity of twenty-five or thirty thousand gallons au hour, which is ample for all purpores. 'J ho water puuped from this well is for ced into the largo roeervoir on Skinner's or Shclton's Ilutte, and thence , by gravitation, and pressure amounting at the maximum about 120 pounds to the square inch, sup plies all parts of tho city. This well has been the sole source of city supply from the time it was constructed uutil last year, except during about two mouths of the hottest aud dryest part of the summer, when to meet the increased demauds for water on account of irriagtiou, water was pumped direct from the Willamette at a point east of Midgley's mill, this point being about a quarter of a mile above tho soworago discharge beforo mentioned. Last year, llJtrj, tho company determined to abandon its connection with tho river entirely and find water sulfcient for all pur poses at all times of tho year, by a uew well. Accordingly a well was constructed closo to the bank of the Willamette, east of Midgley's mill, where a very largo flow of water of tho very best quality was found, and we hoped at tho time, that this would so augment tho supply from tho old well as to meet all demands for many years. Soon as this well was established, tho pipe line which main tained our couuectiuu with tho river, was broken, and thero has been no water pumped from tho river at all since 1901 or for the last two years. It was hoped that the new well would so iucrease the supply alforded by that of the old well, as to meet all demauds for many years, but the How- to this well was not quite up to our auti cipations, and tlio unusunl growth of Eugouo has almost doubled the demand for water, and this with the waste aud abuso ol water on tho part of many consumers, Iiiib put our supply closo to the limit during the very dry weather which has recently prevailed. Tho company is trying to promptly meet this emergency, by constructing a largo Hlterer or percolator, from tho well to the river. It iB universully conceded that there is a large How of wafer throng!; tho stratum of gravid which underlies the soil all over the this valley, and that this How comes for the most part from the river. That this is true there is no question, and further the water of tho Willamette Valley has the reputation of being as good, if not the best, in the United States. Then, agalu, there is no quest inn that therei are numeroniis subterranean channels through this gravel, if they could be found, carrying nil immense volume of water, such a How was In i fact found at tho oi l well. ThU totil lain lioeii followed ly a long aorii'8 of testw and analyses by tho most competent biithoritios: to bo found. Professor MoCluro, after ho becamo Professor of Chemistry in the Univoriwty, repeatedly tested tho wator, always with tho tlrrft ronult, then Piol'os or Laehman, ono of tho boat chomifct-i in tho United States, made a test and found the water ab solutely pure. Dr. Prentice has tested the water also, almost every month of evory year, and declares it to bo absolutely jmre, mid has always found it so. Professor Washburue, of tho Oregon Stato University and at the time State Hioloist, nmdu ! careful .test of tho Kugene water supply, taking it from the hydrants, aud not only made a chemical test, as others had done before, but a biological or micoscopi cul test, making it thorough and ex haustive and with the same results ua all former cMiminntious, namely, that it is absolutely freo from con tamination of uny kind. Tho Oregon Stato Hoard of Jlealth has very re cently made a test along tho sumo lines as that of Prufessor Washburn, and they also fouud a purity not ex celled by tho water supply of any city in this country. Alter all this, it must follow that the statement, made by the Eugene corriespundent of tho Tclt gram, is a tissue of malicious and willful falsehood from beginning to end, aiid no man could make Mich a statement who has not ost all sense of truthfulness and-honesty. The Kugeno Walci Company has nothing to conceal from the public, concerning the source or character of the city water supply, but know that tho water and tho service will favor ably compare with that of any other company or municipality in this country. Tin Kugeno correspondent for tho Telegram makes tho statement that tho Kugeno water supply, which he declares comes from tho river, has boon fouud upon test to bo very im pure, and that it has been tho occas siou of much of tho sickness which has been prevailing at this place. No moro malicious or false statement could ho uttered by any man. In the first place-very little sickuess which under any circumstances could be at tributed to wator, has occurred at Kugeno at any timo, for Kugouo 1b one of tho most healthful localities in Oregon; and such cases as have oc curred at all have easily been trace able to local water supply, which when abandoned and replaced by city wator, the disease bus immediately ceased, Tho fa.'t is, that Kugenecity water, has lioon demonstrated not only by chemical and biological tests but by the very certain one of its use for Hftoen years, to bo of such exception ally hip,h quality, that some mout hers of tho present city Hoard of Health, have discussed tho advihtt bility, if it could be done at all, of closing all tho wells of tho city and having every one use the city water, aud thus afford absolute protection against such diseases hh aro borne by water. It is the intention of the company from now on to furnish an ample supply of water wholly from wells, which are to bo carefully guarded and frequently tested, and to so ex- t'lid and Improve tho service, us to meet the demand of any pOKrtihlo future development of Kugeno, and to afford nil who desire it tho bene Ills ami convenience of the city water, Very lespei-trnlly, The Kngejie Water Co. ili.LTALKV TO'iTUKK').
