A number of years ago Senator Mitchell and tbe tben congressman, Binger Herman, gave the soldiers tbe privilege of naming the postmaster for Eugene. At that time the U V U was organlz?d, with Dr RubhsM of Thurston as tbe first colonel. Tbey named a candidate, but some of tbe G A R did not like It andjnsmed another. When the soldiers failed to agree the place was given to a woman and the wo men are ibe best friends of the sol diers. Tben tbe G A R passed resolu tions censuring Senator Mitohell and Congressman Hermann. Four years ago tbe democrats nom inated a soldier for representative, and he was eleoted. Two years ago the name of Frank Relsuer was voted on in the U V U and sent to tbe repuull oan convention, but be was ignored and another soldier given tbe office. The U V U and the man we recom mended were thus publicly insulted. Our demrcratlo friends showed their appreciation of the old soldier by mak ing Comrade Sherman janitor of the courthouse. President Roosevelt says all tblngs being equal tbe mildler should have the preference.
