and Union Veteran's Union and
politics.
Tbe Urand Army of the Republic
has no politics. We are made up of
veterans wbo eerved aix mouths or
longer In any regimeul that was mus
tered Into tbe army or navy from 1801
to 1866, in any capacity. The Union
Veterao's Union dix not allow
any soldier to become a member un
less be served in one or more bai lee
and baa a clean record from the war
depaitauent. Ijume eoldiers belong to
both orKutn.ntiona bile others be ong
to neither. Both have very strong
obligations for tbeir members, but they
don't always live up to them, especi
ally If self comes In the way. The
members of the Unlin Veteran's
Union mostly strved two years and
recruited for three n"re, Their duty
is first to the U V U, to any other
soldier, then to soldier's friends irre
spective of party. They have republi
can members, and would you believe
It, populists, und, horrible to reltte,
demooratsl There are also a few Bop
pen.
A number of years ago Senator
Mitchell and tbe tben congressman,
Binger Herman, gave the soldiers tbe
privilege of naming the postmaster for
Eugene. At that time the U V U was
organlz?d, with Dr RubhsM of Thurston
as tbe first colonel. Tbey named a
candidate, but some of tbe G A R did
not like It andjnsmed another. When
the soldiers failed to agree the place
was given to a woman and the wo
men are ibe best friends of the sol
diers. Tben tbe G A R passed resolu
tions censuring Senator Mitohell and
Congressman Hermann.
Four years ago tbe democrats nom
inated a soldier for representative, and
he was eleoted. Two years ago the
name of Frank Relsuer was voted on
in the U V U and sent to tbe repuull
oan convention, but be was ignored
and another soldier given tbe office.
The U V U and the man we recom
mended were thus publicly insulted.
Our demrcratlo friends showed their
appreciation of the old soldier by mak
ing Comrade Sherman janitor of the
courthouse.
President Roosevelt says all tblngs
being equal tbe mildler should have
the preference. Tbe btttle-scarred vet
erans that bave done tbe work are tbe
beet judges and will stand by their
oboloe aud live up f tbeir principles,
in or fail. It makes no difference if
a man of doubtful proollvltles forgets
to nominate our candidate after prom
ising to do so. We will Btay with our
principles whether or not we are sold
out. Boys do your duty!

time to attend tbe last stage of the
funeral of Cecil Rhodes A speoial
road baa to be out to tbe spot on
Matoppo Hill, which Mr Rhodes deslg
nated as his final resting place. At
present tbls place can only be reached
by a dlfllault bridle path. Mr Will
iams says the burial will not take
plaoe for about a month. Tbe grave
will be marked by a noble monument,
tobe erected by the dead stateman's
personal friends and business col
leagues. It is proposed that tbe gun-carriage
which bore "Long Cecil" during the
siege of Kimberly, and which will
oonvey the body tip the steep side of
Matoppo, shall be stationed on tbe
summit of the bill as part of memorial.
