(K, nmu ri,u. In:,' like Hi,. iv..ple cannot stand up. Tlie iIi-m shock came at o'clock ill Oct. a i. 1 was awakened. I got lip and was thrown back Into bed. 1 got up again and was knocked to IV floor. 1 finally succeeded In reaeHTiig the street. There everything was colifu timi. an I buildings were falling on all tides. "For live nights I slept in the pinna. Everybody has been sleeping in the parks since the first shock. Everybody Is sick and very nervous. It is de pressing to see people praying, expect ing every moment to be killed. There have been from four to six shocks ev ery day for five days. "For three days the tremors were so regular that u person could set a watch by thein. They came at 2, B and 11 a. in. and 4, i:M and 10:3u p. m. One shock would stop a watcli, and the succeeding shock would start it again. "People are really going mad. Nearly all the towns along the coast arc total wrecks. There are over 400 dead in one small town along tho coast. The authorities cannot even estimate fit this time how ninny are killed nud injured. The earth opened where the laud was low, and that is the reason tho coast towns were most affected. "The earthquake created terrible havoc in Caracas, though tlie city Is very highly elevated. The city is In ruins. About M) buildings out of every 100 nro wrecked. The large enpltol Is split In four pieces. All tho largo churches havo beeu demolished. What have not fallen down will have to bo torn down, tevery place is closed up. Business of all kinds has been suspend ed. There were not many killed In Caracas, but many were injured. "The trains cannot run to Caracas over the mountains, therefore the mall has to be taken to the coast by mules, Baltimore Sun. Ovcrcroivdcd London. At the present moment, writes Sir Walter Besant in The Century, those parts of East London Inhabited by the workingnien of all kinds, from the re spectable artisan In steady employment dowu to the casual hand nud the chil dren of the street, are suffering from the dearth of houses. There are not enough houses for tlie people; there are not enough single rooms for the fami lies which would gladly occupy them If they could. The rents of the lowest tenements are going up higher and higher. The working people compete witli one nuother for rooms. Tlie laud lord has only to put up his house or his rooms In his house to tho highest bid der. A room that used to be let for 4 shillings a week can now command 0, while the tine, or the sum paid on tak ing the key, which was formerly a few shillings, now runs up to a pound or even 2. The houseless used to be considered the very poorest. Among them now are families where the head Is in good work. They are houseless because there are no houses for them. The vast Increase of population has a good deal to do with this. For instance, tho outlying suburb of East Ham, 20 years ago a mere hamlet, with a few houses and an old church In tlie fields, now numbers 00,000 people, all of the work ing class, while Its neighbor, West Ham, which 20 years ago consisted of two or three scattered hamlets, Is now a great town of 270,000 people, all of the working class. I the I.OKt I'lclnd Foondf One of the most beautiful legends re lating to the Btars Is that of "the lost Pleiad." It would appear that in an cient times ordinary eyes saw distinct ly seven stars in tlie group of the Ple iades, although now only sir are thus visible. The lost Pleiad has been a sub ject not only for poets, but for astrouo mers, who have frequently discussed the question whether such a star ever really existed. Recently the question has been revived, and the English as tronomer, Mr. W. T. Lynn, after de claring that there can Bearcely be a doubt that In former times seven stars were clearly visible in the rieiades, quotes approvingly the suggestion of Professor Pickering that tho faint star known as Plelono is the lost Pleiad. This opinion Is based on tho peculiar appearance of the spectrum of Plolone, which Indicates that It may bo an Ir regularly variable star. The Gypny Moth. Because a Boston man forgot to close his window the stnte of Massachusetts has lost $3,000,000 and Is still losing $500,000 n year. Tho ninu was a silk grower. He sent to France for some gyp sy moths, which he Intended to experi ment on with a view to a new brand of 0nir rti.n ,inv tie sat at his table exam ining some of these moths, when he was called out of the room, lie lert me .vliulnw nnen. niid tho drnft blew the mollis out. Two years later caterpillars ate the leaves oil every rorest ami iruu to fnf mllnn nrnnnd. TheV were EVP- sy moths, and the state has spent over $3,000,000 In fighting the pests. Science', Alnnnlnir Strides. Ill a recent lecture Dr. lloffliauor claimed that the age of fishes can lie told bv their scales. 'J lieso show under the microscope stripes similar to the bands in tlie crosscut of a tree, which Indicate the age of the fish. We are now able to approximately state the ntre of horses, INh.-s and trees. Trein- i.lo ..I.
