Balem, Feb 13.- Tbe senatorial situa tion Is undergoing a slight change. Corbett Is trying a smooth game. He has a few members who will finally vote for him, and these remain In the ranks af tbe opposition. However, one oomes over to Corbett every few days, thus endeavoring to convince those of weak faltb tbat resruits are coming In to tbe ranks, and the faithful are using this as an argument for others to go and do likewise. Mltohell can muster about forty-three votes In tbe Joint oonventlon today, yet he will not be presented as an open candidate until be Is sure of forty -six. Bbould be be unable to bold forty-six votes, It Is claimed tbat Bmlth will be seriously oonsldered as a candidate. Hence tbe question now stands, Bmlth or well that's tbe rub. Tbat little this this Vol visit to word "or" has so far eluded tbe watch fulness of every politician, candidate and newspaper man in Oregon, In ao far as oontlnui'ng tbe sentenoe is con cerned. Tbe Guakd baa published news relative to tbla matter from twelve to twenty-four hours In advance of any other newspaper In Oregon, and will continue to do so in the future if pos sible. Polnteis in regard to tbe situa tloa are hard to get, and Ills only by the utmost care and watchfulness that bis office once more after a tussle with aythlDg Ma be learned ofaotions to toe grip. Tbe electrlo lights were turned on in the new armory lait evening for the first time. The band miustreli held an inter esting rehearsal at tbe opera bouse last nlgbt. . Robt Pratt is aotlug as oity marshal today In the absence ot Marshal Robert Brady at Cottage Grove. The seoond semester began at tbe University yesterday. A few new students are registering. It Is thought that the new armory will be ready next week fur the mil itary companies to move In. Ax Billy be taken in the future relative to it. However, suggestions here and there seem to lndloate tbe ultimate defeat of Corbett, While nothing material has as yet transpired, some Insight of events to oome are mlirored in present actions aud it seems more probable than ever tbat tbe Quahp'b predictions areabout to be realized. As an example of the statement made above relative to the dropping over of Corbett's known supporters from assumed positions, to tbelr aotual places In Corbett's support, note the following from the daily Btatesmau: "The members of the Legislature are getting extremely, restless at the un satisfactory oondltloas prevailing, with adjournment less than two weeks henoe. They all agree tbat an ' elec tion must be bad, and they are casting about for a way out of tbe difficulty. What that way will be they do not say that is the anti-cauoua forces hava no explanation to give but they are determined to eleot, and there- Is little doubt they will do so. How soon Mr Blaok's example will be fol lowed by any considerable number can not now be predicted, but it a likely to be very soon." Fancy Mr Blaok aotlng as bell-sheep for the purpose of leading In weak kneed members to the Corbett fold. It has been known tor some time that Mr Blaok would oast his support to tbe Poitland banker,' and he Is only aotlng as his natural Inclinations dlo- tale, aud has not changed his mind and been won over, or any hing else of that kind. It Is only an act in the general scheme to stampede undecided members to Corbett. Mrs Andy Taylor is visiting In Cor vallls. Phil Wllman, of Colfsx, Is iMUag In Eugene.
