Maine and Vermont are Septem ber state election etatoa. The re sults this year compared with those of four years ago, preceding the eleotion of President AIoKinloy, show: MAIKE. Demooratio gain S3 per cent Republican loss 12 " " VKBMOKT. Demooratio gain I I per cent Republican loss 9 " " A LOST OPPORTUNITY. The starter of the Gulf of Mexico hurricane that devastated Galveston and the eaBtern coast of Texas Sat urday afternoon, September 8th, was noted by the Weather Bureau on the Ctb. At that time the hur rioane was central on the ooast of Florida where a thirty-six mile an hour breeze was blowing. Tele grams were sent out to ooast points that shipping north of Cape Hat teras wouli be safe for another twenty-four hours. Chief Weather Observer Moore lost bia opportunity for making a reputation. He was "skeptioal" about the wind increasing in vio lence, and said the wind was "juBt holding its own." It reaohed at least a hundred mile olip at Ual veaton. PHILIPPINE DOCTOR BILL. It oosts tho United States govern ment the enormous sum of 1720, 000 a year to keep surgeons and other medical offloers in the Phil ippine. This does not inolude nurses, lioepltal attendants and medioinea. Tbe oflloial records show that there are four hundred medical officers in tha Philippines at an average salary of 1,800. A recent war department bulletin states that the siokness amounted to 8 per oent. This for an army of 60,000 would be 4,800 men on the sick list, an average of 12 patients for eaoh medical offloer. Waller Winans, tbe famous pistol shot, recently had this to say on how to shoot successfully and well: "As to the possibilities of the re volverwell, aooording to my Ideas, at twelve yards the pistol is perfect, if the man can shoot. At twelve yards you ought to be able to put all tbe bullets in one hole. I have done it twine in one afternoon. At fifty yards I on put them all into a four-inoh bulls-eye, and at 100 can put most of them in. The limit of the revolver is 400. I made forty-one out of a possible forty two, firing six shots in twelve eeo ends, at a two-inch bull's eye at twenty yards range. The overflowing of Galveston by 'he sea recalls to mind tbe greatest v Mtrophe of modern times. On November 1, 1755, three severe earthquake shocks, almost as if one, almost leveled tbe seaport oity of Lisbon, Portugal, to the ground. Almost Immediately a great tidal wave forty feet high came in from tbe ocean and overwhelmed the oity, completing the work of des truction. In the small space of six minutos 35,000 people perished. Portland Daily Telegram, Rep: "When Senator Hanna says that 'the result in Maine has no bear ing on the national election,' he confesses that it was a disappoint ment to the Republican managers and be utters a silly falsehood with the next breath when he adds that it 'was in no seose a disap' pointment to the Republicans.' " The Telegram reports that there were more bathers in tbe river at Portland Tuesdsy than any pre vious day of the summer. Up here, nearer the headwaters, tbe water has got too oold for pleasant bathing. An observer on tbe Portland water front reports twenty-two soow dwellings on one aore of river below the steel bridge. An aore is about 212 feet square. The free rent water dwellers have sand- wiobed in quite closely. The Hobnken Sobuetzenbund German sooiety believed that the elegant and musical funerals it gave deceased members led to suicide, and it has stopped its premium on postmortem vanity. Denver Post: "A Republican paper says: 'President Mo- Kinley has tbd prayers of tbe Christian people Jin this struggle.' Well, he is the fellow that needs 'em moBt." The steel trust is opening up a few of ita mills, but it is reduoing the wagoB and lengthening the working hours of its employes. MAKES THE BLOOD PURE AND PREVENTS DISEASE.
