titute and suffering people of this city and adjoining coun
try are pouring in by the train loads.
Money is also being received in large amounts from
friends and commercial backers.
PROPERTY LOSS GROWS.

Galveston, Sept. 13. Conservative men thought
ten million loss estimate plenty high at first glance at
situation.
They have changed their opinion. It is
that a $20,000,000 figure is none too low.
The city will be rebuilt. That is the consensus of
opinion among all classes.
COAL STRIKE ORDERED.

Indianapolis, Sept. 13. The execotive committee of
the United Mine Workers has ordered a general strike in
the anthracite coal region.

from Galveston, via Virginia Folut
and Houiton, received bare at 11 a m,

lorlty of these men were negroes, but
whites took part In tbe fleseoratlon or
tbe dead. Some of tbem were natives
and some had been allowed to go over

rob the dead but they mutilated bodies

During the robbing of tbe dead not
only were fingers cut off, but ears were
stripped from the head In order to se

robbing of the dead, and on several
occasions have killed offenders. Itn

to sea. Barges and tugs were quiokly
made ready for tbe purpose, but It was
difficult to pet men to work.

yesterday morning, to plaoetbe bodies
In morgues for Identification, for It
was imperative that the dead should
be gotten to sea as soon as possible.
Many of tbe bodies taken out are uni
dentified. They are plaoed on the
barges as quickly as possible and lists
are made wbile tbe barges are being
towed to sea.
CITY UNDER MARTIAL LAW.
Mayor Jenes has given very full
scope to Chief of Police Ketchuin, and
Mr J H Hawley, obplrman of Ihe com
mittee ou publio safety,- to swear li
oitizens of good character as officers,
and hss told tbem tbat able-bodied
men must be made to work or get off
tbe Island. The city, he said, was un
der martial law.
Ploket lines bave been established
around the large stores, and guards
placed on duty. The soldiers and po
lios are instructed to shoot any one
caught looting or attempting to loot.

ures are necessary.

hatchery took 2,700,000 eggs, and the
Salmon River hatchery took 1,200,000.
While the egg supply this year Is qulle
low, it Is considerably greater than
last year's supply.
A man on the Rogue River near
Gold Hill, has availed himself of the
opportunity of speailug large num.-
btre of fish, without Infringing on the
law. He has constructed a sort of a
dam out of brush, wblcb extends from
both sides of tbe stream, but a small
opening is left In the middle for tbe
fish to pass through. He has built a
platform at this opening and can spear
any amount of null, which seek to pass.
Nothing can be done to prevent this,
as bis dam does not reach all ot the way
across, and he uses neither traps nor
seines.
