The OregoDian eays the war in the Philippines "is simple case of .rebellion" and that "it bae not been the habit of this ' people to flank in their undertakings." Yea, the "people" are all right, and can not only be depended upon not to "flunk," but also to do justice, even to a Filipino. We oommend a re cent New York Journal editorial to the flunkless editor of the Orogon ian: "The war in the Philippines has been going on just one year and a half today. For eighteen weary months the beet blood of the Untied States has been drained into a re pulsive and apparently bottomless swamp of guerilla fighting that leads to nothing, and we have spent on the wretched job more money than the Demooratlo party under Jefferson and Monroe needed to triple the area ot the republic. "When we began war with Spain, a nation of eightoen m illion people, with a considerable navy, an army that could call upon a million trained men, a troaBury and a com- plotely organized government, we iought ber to a standstill in three months and a half, and we never put more than 30,000 men in our fighting line. To suppress 2,000, 000 organized Tagals, In what we have never recognized as a war, we are using 05,000 men, and after eighteen months of hard fighting we do not seam much nearer sucooes than we were in the beginning. "Does not this simply atrocious mismanagement somewhere? And how long Is it to be kept up? Are the Amorioan people prepared to resign themselves to a permanent Btate of war In the Philippines, with a great part of their resources in men and money annually He voured to no purpose? "Our army of occupation In the islands is equal to the entire force that a state like New Jersey could be expeoted to raise to resist invas ion. I'raotically, therefore, we have subtracted a state like New Jersey from ihe dofeneive resuroes of the nation. That is what has been accomplished by imperialism, masquorading in the robes of ex pansion. "If we had given the Filipinos a voice in the management of their own country there would have been no war. If we would oonde noniid to negotiate with tlx in the viar could be stopped even now. "In dealing with the savage Moroa of the Sulu Islands, with their polvgamy, slavery and mon archy, we were willing to recogniie the lncnl authorities and customs, nd by dping so we obtained the allegiance of these ferocious bandits without a Mow. Why should we refuse to do as much for the civil iicii add Clirietiun iiilihliiiunU of Iaizoii ?" KEAS0XS F0K THE! It CHANGE Men like (J over nor lioutwell of Musuttchuhetts and ex-Senator Henderson of Missouri do not change life-long political affiliations without deep and abiding reasons. Chairman Jones states their case and that of their numerous col leagues as follows: "The leaders ol the anti-imperialists are of the order of citizens that are frequently desoiibed by our Republican friends as the 'best olasses.' That they are practical men, loo, is shown by their indorse ment of Bryan. If they were mere theoretic visionaries, they would have nominated an independent ticket and thrown away their votes. They want to defeat MoKinley, and being men of senHe, they are aware that the only way MoKinley can be beaten is by electing Bryan." New York World: Gens George Washington and U 8 Grant would be greatly BUrpriBfd to hear that our commanding ofiicer iu China is to bo the German Count von Wal dersee. Thin iB the way the Albany Dem ocrat states the case: The spring wheat is being threshed and 'cuBBed." rtn Los! veers. Figure it for yourself.
